MOCA shares the popular vision that societies around
the world are being transformed through economic globalization, digitization, and advanced technology. It was fortunate
to start with an ideal setting to engage in international
artistic exchange. However, it also continuously redefines
its own position and attempts to create a niche for a distinctive Taiwanese vision, which is an increasingly important
strategy, for globalization is also leveling local
visions and
making them uniform.
Taiwan’s unique position in Asia makes
it even more important for MOCA to develop more international
networks. We are confident that that the enhanced
dialogue that would result through increased international
exchange would serve both to enliven and to reshape
culture, whether Taiwanese or foreign. One useful
“entry point” for that dialogue would
be urban culture, since virtually all cultures
are now either urbanized or urbanizing, or are
dealing with the stresses from that process.
MOCA exemplifies a perfect combination of contemporary
art, historical architecture, and technology,
thanks to the joint efforts of the Taipei City
Government, the local community, artists, and
the business world. In the future, MOCA will continue
to spark creativity in all spheres of life by
organizing all kinds of exciting exhibitions and
performances. Besides displaying contemporary
art in new and usual media within a beautiful
historical setting, it will bring innovation into
Taipei and art into the community.
