Taipei City Hall Era
In 1949, after the Nationalist government
moved to Taiwan, Taipei City was also designated
a “municipality.” The first mayor, Huang
Ch’ao-ch’in, made Jian Cheng Elementary
School building the seat of the Taipei City Government
and converted it from a building serving an educational
purpose to one serving an administrative purpose.
To meet new user demand, the City Government tore
down the wall that originally surrounded the school
and built, in various stages, a tall, reinforced
concrete building on the north side. Among various
other changes, the playground was also converted
into a parking lot.
