Unvoid—Stijn Ank Solo Exhibition

After having worked for several years as an architect, Stijn Ank moved away from the functional, utilitarian aspect of that field in order to pursue freer, more autonomous interests. Thus, he becomes an artist focusing mainly on sculptures. With the background of architecture profession, Ank instinctively searches for new possibilities within an existing space. Meanwhile, he is fascinated by the invisible existence in the space; for this reason, he continuously explores and ponders the transition between existence and void.

Ank significantly blends liquid plasters and pigments as materials and pours the liquid plasters step by step into a pre-cast mold with multi-layers, and then waits for plasters to solidify in the various-shaped molds. After removing the mold, one can see the softened layers of poured plaster stained by pigment revealed on the lime white wall. This artistic expression not only manifests Ank’s attempt to be absent in the piece and to let the matter speak for itself, but also indirectly signifies how the time is frozen and stilled in the piece. Ank defines his creation as a Subject with a will of its own, not merely being viewed as an Object. Ank’s work also is a re-interpretation of the space/time where he belongs to. Through creating the lines in the space, Ank’s work evokes the Minimalist belief that sculpture’s essence derives both from its objecthood and its relationship to its surroundings, and also reflects Ank’s perception and imagination of the present situation.

UNVOID is Stijn Ank’s first solo exhibition in MOCA, Taipei. Responding to the space and flow of the museum gallery, the exhibition is separated into three sections, each section represents one piece of work, two of which are site-specific installations. In addition, the exhibition encourages the audience to enter the gallery with a pacified mood, and actively discover the boundary between existence and void and the dialogue between Subject-Object while engaging the setting of light and shadow, airflow and time.

Artist Introduction

安克 Stijn Ank

Stijn Ank was born in Belgium in 1977 and graduated from Sint-Lukas Brussels, university college of art and design majored in architecture, currently living in Berlin and Brussels. With the background of architectural profession, Ank turned to be an artist who mainly does sculptures and installations for the reason of finding his own creativity in a more liberal definition. He chooses plaster, which is a familiar medium for him as an architect, to be the main elements in his artworks. Also, the sensitivity to the space and the environment that Ank has as an architect makes his works have the ability to break the barriers between paintings and sculptures, and find a new entry point.

About the Artworks

Unvoid

In the video installation “Unvoid”, Ank used a wooden cabinet with transparent glass door instead of a metal mold he usually uses as a container for plaster. He poured various colors of plasters into it, so that viewers could learn its internal interaction through the glass door. What conversation the plasters have with each other, what the transformation from one physical state to another is, how the space and time be reflected, and what the process is when a concept turns into a figured work, all could be answered in the “Unvoid”

Ank significantly blends liquid plasters and pigments before he pours into a pre-cast mold with multi-layers in steps, waiting for the solidification of plasters inside various-shaped molds. It is the fact of not being able to completely control the interaction happening inside the molds demonstrates the characteristics of plasters, such as pores leaving on the uneven surface, as well as the delaminated lines resulting from the gravity. Rather than representing object or form that already exists, he tries to cut lines from space and make it become tangible, bringing the conversation between people and space, as well as space and space to the public.

〈08.2017〉

This work is a twist at the art historical and architectural trope of the column. Stijn Ank manages to emphasize the process of pouring even more by also implicating the mold that could be used in the production process. By piling sand bags, he made a high rectangular tower. Inside, he poured hectoliters of plaster. When removing the bags once the plaster was coagulated, a tall vertical sculpture arose. Not only the movement of casting is fixed in the final sculpture, also the laws of gravity could be proofed by the crushed shape of bags lying at the bottom of the tower. It is sculpture in its purest form, illustrating laws of gravity while creating volume with absence of the artist. The work made in this way consists purely of negative space and is, as such, a summary of Ank’s artistic practice. A practice where absence is the highest form of presence.
