2017 Street Fun, Fun Street-MOCA X Community Art Festival

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Taipei began collaborating with the people from the Zhongshan and Shuanglian neighborhood in 2012, forming an interactive relationship with the community through art. Throughout these six years of on-site implementations, MOCA’s dedication in advocating a “wall-less art museum” has clearly taken root in the area’s streets and alleyways. Many talents working in the creative cultural industry have moved into the area, with changes also observed in the lifestyle of the local residents and qualitative changes made possible for the community as whole. As the entire cluster of community is moving towards a new future, the art project serves to facilitate the energy that is propelling the changes, while also preserving the essence of past cultures. It simultaneously pushes forward spatial and temporal shifts and also seeks to capture fleeting yet eternal sparkling glimmers.

Under such state of dynamic equilibrium, through the push-and-pull, scenes of stabilized segments of space-time are captured from people’s everyday activities in the community, and these extended segments seem to be moving landscapes lingering from residual visual effects, giving shape the community’s history. The art project evokes butterfly effects, prompting essential commotions in the dynamic balance. Through the ripples stirred in the existing structure, these artworks sparking the commotions seek to further examine the process of change observed with the deconstruction and reconstruction of the community’s former order.

Looking back at the past six years, we are making a new turn this time and have invited eight sets of artists to study and do collaborative work in the area surrounding MOCA, Taipei, radiating outwards with the museum acting as the geographical center. Furthermore, using the mutual trust and relationships that the museum has established through our years of working with our neighboring community, the artists are invited to condense contemporary art’s social focus into the community, inciting direct physical contact with the people, engaging in collaborative experiments and on-site practices based on those people’s everyday lifestyles. The aim is to create a series of artworks by blending together each other’s energies and through interacting with the community’s people, occurrences, and things.

As the autumn sun still shines gloriously, stroll through the area’s alleys and byways to find these artworks, with communal memories of the local people blended with small delights offered to the visitors, as these artworks fit in perfectly into our everyday lives. Although the city continues to shift and change, there are always certain constant values that never seem to waver with steady contributions extended, enduringly. Those people, those stories dwell on the streets of this community and have come to form a landscape in this autumn season that holds a vitality that is slowly trickling outwards.

Invasive Pigments

New York-based artist Ellie Irons(Artist-in-residence in Bamboo Curtain Studio) has extensively focused on the migration and proliferation of certain plants in tandem with dense human populations. She gathers weeds living in her neighborhood and mines them for pigments, which are used to construct diagrams of color unique to the area. Inviting local residents to participate in this project, the artist takes the participants to search for frequently overlooked unintentional plants in the city, encouraging them to look at the species that they co-exist with from a new perspective.

Find A Way Home

Home is where young people living elsewhere earn to return to on their days off. Home is a house that hardworking commoners hope to own. Home is also possibly a place that one has lived in for a long time but has become a target of urban planning with relocation inevitable. Condensing the concept of “home”, several small houses are placed by Huang Chih-Cheng in the neighborhood. When “homes” become foreign objects placed in people’s everyday environment, how would the people in the area passing by see these “homes”?

Clothed Time

At the age of 13,Wan-yu 's grandfather moved to Taipei from Daxi, Taoyuen. He then became a Western costume tailor. After getting married, he lived with his family in Jian-cheng District. Farming Image Changing Project: every where is

“In season” refers to when a certain produce is in prime harvest time. With people’s collective labor and teamwork, geographical limitations are shattered for when something is in prime harvest season, allowing this sense of “in season” to be shared. This project seeks to document the everyday lives of three groups of people, producers, transporters, and sellers of agricultural produce, highlighting the fact that to be “in season” requires more than just being at the right time and at the right place, it also needs harmony to be formed between people and things.

Chang Po-Yang

Nothing Can Call It

A mode of transportation is needed for traveling to different places, and upon arrival at a specific destination, a person readjusts and goes through the cycle of initial meeting, familiarization, and desensitization. This artwork documents the capital city Taipei which ushers in different people on a daily basis. Each outside lives among those born in Taipei, and becomes someone that does not belong but has no place to return to, as their original dreams get shifted and buried along with the progression of time.

Ding Chien-Chung

Unknown of Outlines

In the 60s, the area around Taiwan Railway Tamsui Line’s Shuanglian Station was where the automotive parts industry boomed, with Xingcheng Street, Wanquan Street, and Chifeng Street came to be collectively known as the “Blacksmith Street”. The Tamsui Line was terminated in 1988, and along with changes in people’s buying habits, the structure of the area’s industry also began to slowly change. This artwork works with gear belts that are commonly found in the area’s hardware shops, with the sounds from turning motors and the noises from the friction on the rotating belts, memories held deep inside the community’s long-term residents are recalled.

Chi Po-Hao

From a Desk Size...

New, specialized places are emerging in response to the changing urban lifestyle. This artwork is presented in Changee, a co-working and activity space located in the Zhongshan Business District. Chi Po-Hao uses his own experience as a starting point, observes the freelancers working in the space, and combines their living condition and his imagination of their works into a sound installation. Through a participatory approach that seeks to create a domain that sparks imaginative associations, an organic interactive interface with music is created, with the senses of sight and hearing tantalized.

Waiting for What

“Let's go.” “We can't.” “Why not?” “We're waiting for what?”

The title of this artwork is a parody of Waiting For Godot, and it corresponds with the Waiting Room in the exhibition space. Using the music sampling system inside the shop as an input channel and images captured online and rearranged with a computer program as the output, an automated participatory VJ system is created by Yeh Ting-Hao.
