About the Exhibition

This exhibition is a continuation from MOCA Taipei’s launch of the “Art Street” in 2008, with the project’s aim at integrating exhibitions, public artworks, and creative communities through diverse events and contents. Through art developments in the nearby MRT Zhongshan underground area and the Datong District where the museum is situated in, the vision of the project is to build the community with art and to improve the local cultural creative industry.

Being Changed-A Group Exhibition of International Contemporary Art is an exhibition with four Taiwanese and six international artists of the young generation. They have creatively expressed the corresponding relationship between the will and existence through contemporary art’s diverse approaches. Distinctively derived from the different layers and perspectives of the environment, space, body, and psychological notion, connections are discovered from explorations of external objects through self-consciousness, which are further evolved into inseparable life’s essence involving the body and the will.

Huang Xiangzhi’s environmental art, The Perito Moreno Glacier Project, is reflections about the critical condition that the great nature is undergoing. Chang PoYang’s video installation, A Couple Years After They Have Left, uses photography to document marks of time and traces of people. Kan Yihao’s Project Perception Infiltration is about a dancer’s attempt to find proof of the existence of self-consciousness via physical expressions. Pinn Su and German artist Elias Wessel have co-created Project MOJU, and through a dream-like virtual realm, the ambiguity of human’s real and fictional existences is depicted. Sound artist Tara__X has created a sound art performance piece based on gender-related topics. The piece by Andrei Loginov and Franz Rodwalt is a fictional story of adventure and deals with the essence of art. Andreas Walther and Ricardo Sanchez Madrid’s pieces were created on-site in Taipei in 2011 and are portrayal of the various roles and lifestyles of the Taiwanese urban dwellers.

This exhibition is based on the innovative experimental and social mission of the MOCA Studio Underground. Through the artists’ observations and experiences, interpretations of the phenomena in today’s society are created, which are intended to trigger the audience to pay more attention to life’s details and also the different people they may encounter.

Curatorial Statement

The Perito Moreno Glacier Project

攝影輸出、磁磚、描圖紙 Print on photographic paper、Tile、Tracing Paper

The Perito Moreno Glacier Project is derived from Huang’s journey to the glacier in 2008.  For many people, to travel to the Perito Moreno Glacier, is a pilgrimage one must make in life.  However, upon arriving at the glacier after a complicated journey, before her was the heartrending desolated scene of the melting ice field.  Due to this experience, she began The Perito Moreno Glacier Project, and hopes through visual art to raise more awareness for environmental issues.  At the same time, she also hopes to utilize her background in traditional sculpture to further develop on the concept of Social Sculpture proposed by Joseph Beuys (1921-1986).

A Couple Years After They Have Left – A Photo Project of the Military Dependents' Village

Print on canvas

Despite how developed a city may be, it must have started from zero.  From food to dwelling places, these things in life require someone’s efforts in actualization or from exploring nature.  Our ancestors lived in caves and used the experiences acquired from life or wisdom taken from history to leave behind traces of memories and sentiments at their inhabiting places.  These traces are thereby preserved even after they have left or passed on.

Military dependents’ villages hold a significant importance in the Taiwan’s history along with the practical functions they served.  Unfortunately, due to changing government policies and economic developments, many of these symbolic and historic old houses have been and are continuing to be dismantled, with the residents dying of old age or the remaining being forced to evacuate.  Some of the old villages that have yet to be dismantled are there to offer glimpses of the life led by their former occupants, with nostalgic sentiments waiting to be unearthed.

Houses are built by people, and from the time of building to living there, the sentiments and attitudes for life invested in the houses do not easily disappear or get destroy as the actual buildings get taken down or when the residents depart.  Through photography, the artist attempts to uncover the sentiments and spirits still dwelling in these vacant spaces, and allow them to take shape again through the development of the photographs.

崔塔拉 Tara_X(新加坡/ Singapore)

(Project TRANSform_TRANSmit_TRANScend

Multimedia Design

This performance is focused on lost-in-transition process at this moment of the life as Tara begin the transition towards the female end of the gender spectrum. Referencing loosely the gender make-up of the traditional Bugis society in South Sulawesi in Indonesia (which has traditionally in its society 5 genders), she will do 5 performances to camera. For the first performance, she will present her physical self to camera as theOne Man Nation of yesteryear. Then, with each subsequent performance, she will present herself in a more and more feminine way ending with the last performance as one of the possible future outcomes of her physical presentation.

Each performance is done in front of a television set. The first performance will start with her playing live in front of the TV but with nothing being shown on the screen. In the second performance, people will see the first performance screened on the TV and with her playing live in front of that. In the third performance, the video from the second performance will be screened and so on until the last performance where people will see her presenting the most feminine form playing live with the TV behind showing the whole transition process.

Project Perception Infiltration

Pan Yu-Wei

攝影輸出、多媒體裝置Print on photographic paper、Multimedia Design

Despite time and space, the human body carries with it a mysterious penetrating ability, which is able to correspond to the surrounding environment by adapting to changes of time and space.  At the same time, the human body is also like a sponge.  Through feelings experienced by the senses, the body could absorb and alter various environmental factors; it is like a small cosmos with infinite expanding possibilities. Project Perception Infiltration is an artwork based on this concept.  It is not simply a work of body photography or performance art; rather, it is a conceptual piece derived from the artist’s interactions and exchanges with the dancer from numerous performances.  With Project Perception Infiltration as a base, Kan has since developed other artworks, such as Until the MossLoops of Thought, and Faded Journey.  Through works of different genres, he attempts to form an objectification for the abstract concept of the will of the existence.

Project MOJU

影像輸出、多媒體裝置Print on photographic paper、Multimedia Design

The world that we exist in is actually comprised of various things that we believe in.  Therefore, in an objective world, because of individual people’s different beliefs, different people would perceive the material world differently.  Contrary to the saying “Seeing is believing”, Project MOJU is based on the notion that “Believing is seeing”.  By placing belief before existence, faith thus forms the state of existence.  This is why each of us experiences the world differently based on our individual beliefs.

The MOJU mascot is the Golden Monster created by Pinn Su in 2010, and it symbolizes the belief that MOJU stands for.  This fictional creature is incorporated into each piece, whereby a brand new outlook and stance toward life’s passion and global perspective is formed.  MOJU is like a pure innocent child’s soul, and it is also the source of all power.  The two artists believe that the strongest power, ultimately, still comes from within.

Video Program

Unexpected Collision

(Andrei Loginov / Belarus)

(Franz Rodwalt / Kasakhstan)

Video with sounds and colors / 00:20:00 / 2012

This fantastic video work tells a fiction about the encounter between two men and the earth. Falling on the earth which has become a devasted dead planet, the two men are traped in the traces of art beyond time and space. The unexpected collision exposes the enigma of art after collapse of the human civilization.

Equilibrium, in Transition

(Andreas Walther / Germany)

Video with sounds and colors / 00:08:15 / 2012

Living in urban surroundings brings along increased economic pressure and higher living expenses and request the individual to follow economic constraints and often subordinate ecologic qualities and chances; the video shows some of these urban protagonists.

In this respect, the video is not to be understood as a critical approach towards the settings of the Taiwanese society – the material used for the video is of documentary quality – but rather a general statement towards the global role and quality of capital and its influence on our decisions.

Looking for a better world

(Ricardo Sanchez Madrid/ Mexico)

Video with sounds and colors/ 00:05:38 / 2012

This video was shut in Taipei during the residence of the artist at MOCA Taipei in 2011. It means to observe tree elements of the globalization, the comsumerism, the power of media and the influence of western culture on Asia. The consumerism has been used largely by marketing and massive media in order to make profit through making belief of cerain leaving styles and modes. Among others, the concept of “Happy Family” has supported a consumption and utilitarian social system which is simply a colloective reality with signs and symbols.
