About the Exhibition

Heroom-Yi-Ping PONG Solo Exhibition

This exhibition showcases Yi-Ping Pong’s exploration of the relationship between women and family, society, class, race, history, religion, politics, economy and culture. She investigates the spatial structure and power relation between patriarchal politics and matriarchal predominance after personally visiting more than fifty countries from 1993 to 2015. It is also an experimental exhibition that incorporates visual text and interactive dialogue designed specifically for MOCA, Taipei by the artist.

A statement from A Room of One’s Own by the British novelist, Virginia Woolf, has left a lasting impression in Pong’s mind: “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” However, as her journey has unfolded and her cultural exploration in different countries unveiled, Pong has witnessed a common reality, which is that most women might not own a room of their own throughout their lives. Some are never even aware of the significance and importance of having their own space!

For more than twenty years, Pong has studied themes and created works related to women, and her work integrated versatile forms of exhibition and performance, including literature, photography, documentary, drama, and installation art. The thirty-eight new works are all inspired by the authentic experience of her personal journey around the world and her observation of family life in different countries. Pong divides the exhibition space of MOCA Studio into three thematic sections: the hallway represents Women’s Rooms Around the World with lightbox installations, and traces the changes of photography from its beginning to the digital era. R102 presents Pong’s interpretation of Women’s Rooms in Taiwan with nine documentaries. The entire space simulates an atmosphere of a “cinematic street.” Meanwhile, a photography studio is set up in the room for creating dialogues between female audiences and the artist. R103 returns to the artist’s own room. My Room uses her own study as a prologue to revisit how the space has shaped her character and thinking and gradually become the driving force behind her writing, artistic creation and venture into the world. This work also pays homage to Woolf.

Through this exhibition, Pong hopes to reexamine the symbol of “woman,” what it signifies in society, as well as how to construct a self image through “space” while deconstructing social confinement. Heroom is not only a symbol of women’s right and freedom but also a world for women to display their imagination and fantasy.

About the Artworks

Women’s Rooms Around the World〉(走廊區 the hallway)

The series of triad works in the hallway, titled Women’s Rooms Around the World, is presented in four themes: Doll Triptyque, Family Triptyque, Herstory Triptyque, and Kitchen Triptyque. The artist has transformed the media itself into women’s rooms; through twelve individual anti-reportage photographs that construct the rooms of women around the world, the artist reveals the relationship between twelve women and their spaces as well as their life stories.

The exhibition form is actually a reference to Western triptyque paintings and literary trilogy, demonstrating diverse faces of women of different times, ages, regions, religions, classes, and cultures with their differences and similarities. The series also breaks the myth since the invention of photography that images are permanently fixed after being printed. Manipulating optical effect in the digital era and combining designs of electronics through separation and mixing of primary colors, the printed images are embedded with a possibility of continuous changes, taking a step further in the exploration of producing a new language of aesthetics and style in photography.

This installation integrates concepts of photography and cinema; it also pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock. The concept of the work originated from the artist’s travelling experience of staying at a Parisian apartment for women when women in their twenties from around the world expressed in turn their concerns for future. They worried about their lives and possible health issues if they were divorced, single, and living alone in their old age; what should they do, then? In the end, all of them decided that they should build a single women’s apartment and live together in solidarity to help each other, forming a strong community like a family.

In this work, I have invited women around the world to gather together, and presents each woman’s favorite spot of her own space and what she does or what she likes to do most often through telephoto lens, wide-angle lens, and standard lens. Therefore, each light box is presented with different focuses of lenses while incorporating the narrative technique of cinematic space and time to create the lively atmosphere of a single women’s apartment, inviting audiences to gaze and listen to the inner life stories of these women.

R102 focuses on Taiwanese women. With documentaries, it introduces 10 women in their twenties to eighties from diverse groups, religions, martial statuses and occupations. From a presentation of women’s private space, this gallery shifts to public space, such as a photography studio, a wall of films and a cinema. In addition, the artist also invites Taiwanese women to step into the studio for more interaction and exchange, which are live-streamed on the cinema wall in the gallery. Audiences are invited to see, listen to and share these women’s inner worlds.

《我的房間》My Room(103展間)

The work is a partial representation of the artist’s study. Images, sounds and texts are presented as symbols and guide the audience to imagine her space and contemplate on a woman’s room. In the gallery, the artist lays out literary works that have been enlightening to her and portraits of women, such as philosophers like Hannah Arendt, Susan Sontag, Simone de Beauvoir as well as literary writers like Virginia Woolf, Marguerite Duras, etc. With the work, My Room, and eleven films about women of the world, the artist responds to the fact that women are able to build independent characters and develop free thinking because they have their own rooms. Moreover, with an installation, titled Suitcase, the artist also expresses the idea that women can embrace the world and metamorphose into their new selves after stepping out of the study.
