About the Exhibition

Mutant Man

Mutant Man features six video works of computer animation, performance, and hand-drawn animation from the works selected by the 2015 MOCA Video open-call-for-work program. With different perspectives, the six videos discuss how social situations have contributed to human's altered physical perception. Discord, pressure and alienation in contemporary society have caused a break between people's physical perception and the self, other, and environment, transforming them into de-familiarized, frenzied, and mutated bodies.

Five artists are showcased in Mutant Man. Romanian artist Monica Vlad's :interrupted reveals a series of constantly disappearing images of memory and emotional connection, representing human existence in a state of solitude and disintegration. Macedonian artist Darko Taleski has dermatographia. In Help Refugees, he writes down pleas for helping European refugees on his body, epitomizing people's anxiety and discomfort regarding the chaotic international situations on his skin. Zheng Yo-Cheng's The Crazy is inspired by Lu Xun's A Madman's Diary, and depicts the cruelty and shackles imposed by contemporary society, which lead to people's psychological repression, breakdown and escape. In Building, Building, Lin Wang-Tin aims to address how modern urban development has led to a life in cold and modularized buildings. The condition of "non-homes" has transformed people into unfeeling objects, moving but not living. With hand-drawn animation, Young Gym-Jack's The Useless Cha-cha and Everyday’s a Holiday delineate surrealistic bodies that undergo continuous mutations through fantasies in life.

About the Artworks

Monica Vlad

Stuff happens in our lives; we meet people, we go places, we fall in love but then it all goes. People can stop talking to you, stop seeing you or they can just die, the places we went become memories to us, fragments of what used to be not what is. Then eventually when all that is gone we are alone…we die alone.

This work is inspired by A Madman's Diary. It depicts the crazy fantasies resulting from social oppression, displaying modern people's view on society as all kinds of restraints imposed by different rigid societies give rise to a wide spectrum of illusions that triggers intense imagination. The cannibalism in the work reflects a cruel society as well as the pressure shouldered by people in the lower social stratum. The video, therefore, is an attempt to demonstrate the impact suffered by this generation of people in the process of socialization.

The word "build" is a verb. It means to transform different materials and components and combine them together. Today, we have unknowingly changed the entire face of the world, creating many awe-inspiring buildings on the surface of the planet. In my opinion, the world can be divided into two realities. The first one is the reality of the physical space, which is where we inhabit; the second one is the reality of the virtual space, which exists in our imagination. We build our houses according to our ways of life, but at the same time, we also live our life by our imagination. However, there had been a time when human existence was defined by buildings, and the word "build" was associated with the idea of "building one's home." This time, of course, is gone forever.

The artist often review my own thoughts by looking at my dreams. After waking up, all those bizarre, strange dreams give me a chance to contemplate on my connections with the real life. Perhaps, they are from a certain piece of memory that lingers in my sleep and re-surfaces in different ways. So, I would assume the perspective of a by-stander and try to appreciate these dreams, as if were all part of a reality show. This formless, indescribable manifestation of memory continues to appear in different forms, like a sticky, slimy thing that one cannot seem to get rid of.
