展覽介紹 About the Exhibition

本次台北當代藝術館舉辦的【歡迎來我家—蓋瑞‧貝斯曼個展】,是藝術家在亞洲首次的大型個展,除了展出貝斯曼三十年藝術創作生涯中,超過五百件的精采作品,貝斯曼也特意將台北當代藝術館的古蹟建築展場,重新想像打造成獨一無二、具實驗性質的家居空間。
 
展覽空間個別區分成:歡迎主題的「客廳」、歡慶主題的「飯廳」、旅行主題的「走廊」、家族故事主題的「書房」、人文主題的「臥房」、玩樂主題的「個人小窩」、專業生涯主題的「工作室」、表演主題的「後院」、逃脫主題的「公園」及夢境主題的「小巷」,基於貝斯曼將創作及生活融合的特性,此次在客廳及臥房中的展品,將特別包括藝術家童年老家的家俱。
 
為了鋪陳貝斯曼寬闊的創作路線及多元的藝術型態,本展內容包括他為《紐約客》、《滾石雜誌》、《洛杉磯時報》等所創作的插畫作品;一個完整系列的設計師玩具公仔,包括著名的「呆好運」、「恰恰恰小惡魔」及「托比」等原創角色;跨界合作的各式角色服裝及時尚設計;錄像及雕塑裝置;以及他去年遊歷台灣及東南亞時,從各地見聞中發想創作的一批全新畫作。
 
貝斯曼在他的藝術生涯中,透過多種媒材的運用,探索人類生存的狀態,藉由獨具識別性的各種角色人物及視覺形象,展示人類存在的複雜面向。此次【歡迎來我家】的展出,藝術家希望也能激發觀眾去探索、分享自己的故事,並共同去思考關於家庭、友情、生死、苦難、愛與失去、秘密與真理等議題。
 
 
The Door is Always Open—Gary Baseman Solo Exhibition
Gary Baseman: The Door is Always Open makes its Asian debut this summer at MOCA Taipei. Featuring hundreds of works created by Baseman over three decades, the exhibition re-imagines the space of a historic Taipei building into a unique and experiential home environment.
 
Featured spaces include the Living Room (Welcome—Introduction), the Dining Room (Celebration), Hallway (Journey), the Bedroom (the Human Condition), the Study (Heritage), the Den (Play), the Studio Office (Work), the Backyard (Performance), the Park (Escape), and the Alley (Dreams). For Gary Baseman, art and life is always mixed together, so in the Living Room, Dining Room and Bedroom, he especially includes furniture from his childhood home. 
 
Showing the breadth of Baseman’s oeuvre, the exhibition includes illustration works (published in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and The Los Angeles Times); Baseman’s complete line of designer toys including Dumb Luck, Hotchachacha, and Toby; costumes and fashion collaborations; video and sculptural installations; and new paintings inspired by his recent trips across Asia.
 
Throughout his career and through multiple media, Baseman has explored the human condition, showing through his iconic characters and images the complexity of life. The Door is Always Open will evoke visitors to reflect and share their own stories about family, friends, mortality, pain and suffering, love and loss, secrets and truth.

蓋瑞‧貝斯曼
 
貝斯曼常年居住洛杉磯,為現今最具影響力且多元的藝術家之一。貝斯曼的作品,從他早期的插畫作品、獲得艾美獎的動畫系列作品,到完整的設計師玩具公仔和洋溢想像力的畫作及攝影,皆具巧妙觀點,引人目光。過去十五年來,貝斯曼已在美國、歐洲及南美洲舉辦過個展,而他近期的作品則著重於,透過繪畫、表演、影像及時尚設計,探索人類的生存狀態。
 
About Gary Baseman
 
Gary Baseman is one of today’s most prominent and multi-faceted Los Angeles-based artists. From his early works as an illustrator and his Emmy award-winning animation series, to his complete line of designer toys and his imaginative paintings and photographs, Baseman’s work is wickedly insightful and seductive. Over the past 15 years, Baseman has exhibited throughout the US, Europe and South America. His current work continues to explore the human condition through painting, performance, film, and fashion.

認識我的家人—貝斯曼創造角色們

Gary’s Family—the Baseman Characters

貝斯曼以豐沛的想像力所創造的許多角色,有的呼應著文化經典中的原型人物(如:英雄、仇敵、愛人、戰士等),有些則指涉人類處境及狀態,包含:慾望、渴求、情慾、受難、失敗、恐懼和不安全感等。在貝斯曼的創作世界中,他為部份角色取了有趣的名字,也有些角色,以無名的姿態出現,帶有未知的性格,一如貝斯曼自述:「我並未創造角色,他們是自己誕生的,我只是單純把他們畫出來。」雖然這些角色多出現於特定場景,也可能有特殊的背景設定,他們的故事卻多為流動、隨機,可以讓觀眾自行詮釋;他們有些是獨立角色,有較完整的故事描述,有些角色則以自由穿插的方式,在貝斯曼所創作的森林及土地背景中,隨意出現、自由來去。

The abundant imagination of Gary Baseman is filled with archetypal characters (i.e. the hero, the enemy, the lover, the fighter) or aspects of the human condition –desire, longing, lust, suffering, failure, fear, and insecurity. Some characters are strong iconic figures with names; some are nameless with personalities unknown. As Baseman says, “I don’t create characters. They create themselves. I just draw them.” While many of Baseman’s characters appear in landscapes that suggest specific narratives, the stories are fluid, organic, and open to interpretation. Some are created as independent characters, while others relate to each other crossing in and out of Baseman’s otherworldly forests and lands.

 

托比

出生年:1992

托比是隻黑、紅、白相間、富冒險精神的貓,無條件的付出他的愛。他是所有人的好朋友,也是秘密的守護者,貝斯曼創作托比的靈感源自於某些神秘組織(如兄弟會等),而在托比的肚子上有顆全知之眼,頭上戴著土耳其氈帽,上面還有個骷髏符號。托比其實也可看做是貝斯曼的「另一個我」,這點可從藝術家及托比下巴上都留著一小截鬍子看出來,他的命名來自比貝斯曼年長五歲的童年好友兼保姆。

 

Toby    

Year created: 1992

Toby is the black, red, and white adventurous cat that loves unconditionally. A best friend and keeper of secrets, he is a character inspired by secret societies (like the Shriners, Masons, and Odd Fellows) known for their clandestine brotherhood activities.  On his belly is an all-seeing eye, and on his head is a fez with a skull symbol. Toby is Baseman’s alter ego, identifiable by the soul patch that the artist once wore. Toby’s namesake comes from one of Baseman’s childhood friends, a girl five years older who babysat him and who was one of the artist’s early best friends.

 

呆好運

出生年:1999

呆好運是一隻兔子,掌上捧著象徵幸運的兔子腿,是從他自己身上切下來,隨時準備送給有緣人的,呆好運個性呆儍、天真、好運又樂觀,象徵的是生命中的諷刺之處。他最著名的口頭禪就是:「小心地許你的願望!」

 

Dumb Luck

Year created: 1999

Dumb Luck is a rabbit that holds a lucky rabbit’s foot; the one he cut off his own leg. Goofy, naïve, lucky, and optimistic, he represent life’s ironies:  “Be careful what you wish for.”

 

儍蛋一族

出生年:2002

【儍蛋一族】創意構想來自20世紀中期流行的同名桌上遊戲,貝斯曼創造了一系列的同名角色。貝斯曼的就學過程中,班上若有學生調皮搗蛋,就會被罰坐在角落,頭戴看起來儍呼呼的圓錐形帽子,貝斯曼於是顛覆傳統的儍蛋意思,以他獨特的幽默及趣味,以學生常用來互相取笑的綽號,幫自己的角色命名,分別是「慢吞吞」(他總是遲到)、「溝溝」、「愛說謊」、「好寶寶穿鞋子」、「模仿貓」及「稀巴爛」等。

 

Dunces

Year created: 2002

Baseman created the character set of Dunces inspired by the mid-20th century board game of the same name. Subverting the original meaning of a dunce, a student who behaves badly and gets punished by wearing a conical dunce cap and sits in the corner, Baseman added humor and fun. Adapting typical names that school children use to tease each other, Baseman calls the Dunces Re-tardy (always late), Ditch, Fib, Goody2Shoes, Copy Cat, and Pulp.

 

綿綿和綿綿的堂弟

出生年:2004

綿綿是支霜淇淋,他的堂弟則是枝冰棒雪糕,象徵了【快樂儍瓜】系列畫作中,為愛和美而犠牲的天真角色。綿綿性格貼心、天真單純,卻只能遠遠的愛著得不到的美人,也會為了無限女孩、美人魚及其他的神秘女孩角色而融化。

 

Creamy and Creamy’s Cousin

Created: 2004

Creamy, the ice cream cone, and his cousin, a popsicle, symbolize the simpleton characters that sacrifice themselves for love and beauty in Baseman’s painting series The Happy Idiot. Creamy is sweet and naïve, forever longing for someone unattainable. He loves from afar, and creams himself when he gets excited over the Infinity Girls., mermaids, and all the mystical girls of the land.

 

快樂儍瓜

出生年:2004

快樂儍瓜是一座雪人,為了能讓自己心愛的美人魚有水可以存活,而甘願讓自己融化成一灘清水,是貝斯曼眾多願意為了愛而犠牲自我的角色之一,最初靈感來自於貝斯曼的一趟日本之旅。快樂儍瓜也是貝斯曼首次將角色製成陶瓷雕塑的作品。

 

Happy Idiot

Year created: 2004

Happy Idiot is a snowman who melts himself down to create a puddle of water for his beloved mermaid to live in. Originally conceived during a trip to Japan, the Happy Idiot was one of many characters that eagerly melted themselves for the sake of unattainable beauty. Happy Idiot is also one of Baseman’s first fine art sculptures, made of porcelain.

 

智者

智者永生不滅、沉默無語,他們扮演了記憶的守護者,最常出現在【咻咻森林中的捉迷藏】系列畫作中,他們也會收集身體融化、四處散落的咻咻頭,讓他們置放到安全的地點,以防被惡魔偷去取食大腦。

智者們也曾在《托比的秘密集會》中,以公仔造型出現,分別命名為「慈悲」、「命運」、「自由」、「慾求」、「愛」、「信任」和「真理」,他們的名字分別以拉丁文寫在穿著的服裝上,唯一的例外是其中的慈悲智者,靈感則源於藝術家的貓;「午夜智者」(2005)掌管每個人最黑暗的惡夢,而「死亡智者」(2009),則負責管理夢中的現實。

 

The Magis

Ever-present and silent, Magis are the keeper of memories. They appear in the series Hide and Seek in the Forest of ChouChou – collecting disembodied ChouChou heads and bringing them to a safe resting place. Otherwise, Demons crack open the ChouChou heads and eat their brains. 

Magis also appear in “Toby’s Secret Society” (2011), representing Compassion, Destiny, Freedom, Lust, Love, Trust, and Truth. These words are written on their vestments in Latin (with one exception, Purr for Compassion; inspired by the artist’s cat). Midnight Magi (2005) is the keeper of one’s darkest nightmares. Muerto Magi (2009) is the keeper of one’s dream reality.

 

瑪莉蓮

瑪莉蓮是托比的現任女友,此一角色甜美又天真,和貝斯曼第一任女友同名。

 

Marily

Year created: 2005

Marilyn is Toby’s girlfriend. Sweet and innocent, she also shares the name of Baseman’s first girlfriend.

 

愛之神

出生年:2005

英雄氣概、永生不滅的愛之神,全身由大小不一的氣泡組成,以愛之神的姿態,帶著愛與關懷的能量,賦予大地及所有生物滿滿的熱情及希望。

在「咻咻森林」及「綿綿之愛丘陵」出現之前,愛之神的故事早已傳開:在一片臭氣薰天、貧瘠不堪的土地上,住著無法接受愛與關懷的生物,他們的慾求及渴望都被仇恨邪魔給偷走了,他們像是遊魂一般無意義的活著。然而,有股力量悄悄地將愛的欲念,化現成一顆顆的欲望轉化的小氣泡,漂浮傳播於這片被邪魔佔據的土地,然後這些氣泡開始串聯,合成了愛之神的英雄之身,並將邪魔徹底逐出這個世界。

 

God of Love

Year created: 2005

Heroic and ever-present, the God of Love is made up of  bubbles in various sizes. He spreads passion and affection to those who have lost the capacity for love and desire.

His story began thousands of years before the Forest of ChouChou and Creamy Goodness existed, during a time when creatures were unable to give or accept love because the Demons of Hate stole everyone’s sense of desire and longing, causing them to live like drones with no meaning, direction, or hope. Yet, hidden from sight, a force urged the formation of Manifestation of Desire (MOD) bubbles. Brimming with the energy of love and affection, these bubbles grew in all sizes and colors, floating and spreading throughout the land overrun by Demons.

In defense against the Demons, the bubbles joined together, forming the body of the God of Love that ousted the Demons from the forest.

 

恰恰恰小惡魔  

出生年:2005

恰恰恰小惡魔有三隻腳,專偷天使的光圈。他是貝斯曼【超世歡愉的花園】系列作品中的主要角色,這座花園充滿著頑皮罪惡和放蕩,靈感源於15、16 世紀的畫家—希羅尼穆斯波希。恰恰恰小惡魔的特色是,雖然身型最小,卻能以無比的魅力說服天使交出他們的光圈。

 

Hotchachacha

Year created: 2005

Hotchachacha is a devil with three legs that deflowers angels by stealing their haloes. He is the main character in Baseman’s otherworldly landscape of the Garden of Unearthly Delights, a land of playful sin and debauchery, inspired by the art of 15th- and 16th-century artist Hieronymus Bosch. Once the tiniest devil, Hotchachacha overcompensates with great charm and is able to encourage angels to surrender their haloes.

 

咻咻族

出生年:2006

溫和善良的咻咻族靈感源自貝斯曼飼養多年的黑貓—小黑,在藝術家忙碌的生活中,小黑貓發揮了一種穩定心靈的力量。但在早期的作品中,咻咻是以類似小海豹的樣貌。

忠實良善、富有愛心的咻咻族,住在咻咻森林中,將他們的愛及關注奉獻給同住在森林中的荒野女孩,消除荒野女孩心中的負面能量及仇恨,當咻咻吸取負面能量,他們的肚臍會流出「綿綿之愛」,他們也會因此身體融化、面臨死亡,在他們的頭顱乾涸之前,除非有一心地純潔、善良無恨的女孩回饋一吻,才得以復活重生。

 

ChouChou

Year created: 2006

The gentle, compassionate ChouChou manifested in 2006, inspired by Baseman’s purring cat Blackie - a calming force in the artist’s life. Earlier versions of ChouChou show him as a seal.

Loving and caring, ChouChous live in the Forest of the ChouChou, dedicating their love and attention to the Wild Girls, from whom they take away negative energy and hate. When a ChouChou absorbs negative energy, he oozes Creamy Gooey Love from his bellybutton. His little body then melts and, unless a girl kisses his head, his skull dries out and he dies. Only a girl of pure of love and absent of hate can kiss him to regenerate his physical body so that he can live again.

 

鹿女

出生年:2006

鹿女是一位生活在原野的少女,喜歡在森林中玩耍,並將自己的頭髮編成鹿角狀。鹿女能以舌頭舔舐所愛對象的傷口,讓他們回復健康,但有時也會忍不住將其吃掉。

 

Venison

Year created: 2006

Venison is a wild girl who plays in the forest and puts branches in her hair to look like a deer. She licks the wounds of her loved ones to nurture them back to health, only to later devour them.

 

吻痕小蝠

出生年:2007

角色性格:純真、勇敢、有愛心。

吻痕小蝠是隻勇敢又純真的角色,先後出現於【我在你面前融化】、【在咻咻森林中玩捉迷藏】等系列作品中。牠是一隻水果蝙蝠,卻一心一意想要成為吸血蝙蝠,但牠根本無力咬破對方皮膚,只能留下類似吻痕的另類印記。

 

Hickey the Bat

Year created: 2007

Brave and innocent, Hickey appears in the landscape paintings of I Melt in Your Presence and Hide and Seek in the Forest of ChouChou. Hickey is a fruit bat who longs to be a vampire bat. He can’t break one’s skin, so he only leaves hickeys (bruises) behind.

 

嗚嘎

出生年:2008

角色性格:有愛心、富關懷的三頭龍,象徵一種父母們強調安全、守護的任務。有趣的是,在貝斯曼四歲時,嗚嘎其實是「蛋糕」的代名詞,當時他與父母正在以色列拜訪親戚,每當想吃海棉蛋糕時,就會不斷重覆「嗚嘎」一詞。三頭龍造型的嗚嘎,一方面代表了貝斯曼父母的宗教信仰及價值觀,以及他們想要保護子女的執著;另一方面,貝斯曼呈現對抗嗚嘎的形象,卻也象徵為了找出自我人生方向,必須違背父母心願的個人堅持。

 

Ooga

Year created: 2008

Ooga is a caring three-headed dragon that for Baseman symbolizes parental beliefs of security and protection. Referencing Baseman’s own life experiences, Ooga translates into “cake,” a word that four year-old Baseman repeated over and over again when he wanted more spongecake while visiting relatives in Israel. Ooga represents Baseman’s parents (their religion and values) and their desire to protect him. Baseman tries to slay Ooga, to find his own way, sometimes going against his parents’ wishes.

 

頓悟的咻

出生年:2009

角色介紹:純真而聰穎,能消除世界上的仇恨。「頓悟的咻」本名為「啊」,是課堂中最聰明的一位,隨時戴著三個小頭是他的造型特色。當他所居住的森林被惡魔佔領並製造混亂,他和自己的三位同伴保護了居住的土地,他頭上的三顆小頭即是自己犠牲的朋友們,而他身上的刺青是對於苦難經驗的一種紀念。

 

The Enlightened Chou

Year created: 2009

Intelligent and innocent, the Enlightened Chou takes away the collective negativity and hate in the world. Originally named Ah, the Enlightened Chou was once the brightest and smallest in his class. When the forest is overrun by Demons that create great chaos, he and his three companions defend the land. On his head, the Enlightened Chou wears the heads of his three friends who make the ultimate sacrifice; on his body are tattoos that memorialize the plight that he experienced.

 

巴金翰戰士

出生年:2010年

角色來源:巴金翰戰士這個自律嚴謹、性格堅強的角色,靈感源自藝術家的父親—班.貝斯曼;二次大戰之時,他逃入東波蘭的森林中,加入對抗俄國入侵的游擊隊長達三年的時間。蓋瑞.貝斯曼的雙親雖然倖為猶太屠殺歷史慘劇的生還者,但他們其實已痛失大部份的家人,貝斯曼創造了巴金翰戰士的形象,並以父母親的故鄉為同角色公仔取名,以紀念這一段悲愴的歷史。

性格:英勇的自由鬥士,以堅強的意志,為正義而奮戰不屈。

某天,森林裡來了貪婪、企圖覇佔森林的一名男爵以及一群惡徒黨羽,有隻名叫巴金翰的雄鹿,勇敢挺身反抗男爵。巴金翰搖身一變成為勇敢的戰士,雖然擊斃了許多惡人,但本身也慘被敵人殺害。他絕不服輸的強大靈魂,讓他不僅死而復生,也讓重生的他多了好幾個頭顱,且更有神力保衛家園,並成為不朽的神話傳奇!

 

Buckingham Warrior

Year created: 2010

A stoic, strong-willed defender of justice, the Buckingham Warrior was inspired by Baseman’s father, Ben Baseman, who escaped into the woods of Eastern Poland during World War II, and fought as a partisan for three years. Both of the artist’s parents were Holocaust survivors, and lost most of their family members during the war. The names of the Buckingham Warrior toys (Berezne and Kostopol, for example) honor the original hometown areas of Baseman’s parents.

As the story goes: Buckingham lived in symbiosis with all the creatures of the land, until one day, the brave deer protested against the unwanted occupation of the forest by a greedy land baron and his malevolent henchmen.  The Buckingham Warrior bravely fought off the assailants but eventually had his head lopped off by an evildoer. In an act of pure otherworldly defiance, the Buckingham Warrior grew his head back, as well as several other heads. The deer stood his ground, thereby cementing his legend as a freedom fighter.

 

阿嗚

出生年:2011

猴子阿嗚的取名來自動物嚎叫「嗷嗚~」的聲音,他有著既貼心又邪惡的雙重個性,喜愛被注意,也渴求旁人的關愛,但如果需求無法獲得滿足,就會變成嚇人的吸血猴。阿嗚的靈感來源也是藝術家的貓,牠個性貼心,卻也需要別人注意,有時造成傷害,只為達到自己的目的。

 

Ahwroo

Year created: 2011

Pronounced “ah-wrooo,” like an animal howling, the adorable but vicious Ahwroo seeks attention and affection, and draws blood if he feels that he is not getting adequate love. Inspired by the artist’s cat that is sweet but demanding of attention, he asserts his needs by inflicting pain and injury.

 

出生年:2010

一種毛絨絨、有點暴牙的生物;專偷小女生的心,並以此為食。心中充滿對愛的渴望,噶卻總是很不幸的對旁人造成傷害。

 

Grrrr

Year created: 2010

Grrrr is a furry snaggle-toothed creature that steals and then eats the hearts of little girls. Lovelorn and longing, he sadly causes harm to those around him.

 

酷狗上學記

《酷狗上學記》是貝斯曼創作的艾美獎得獎動畫作品:主角是隻名為斑斑的狗,因為太想學習而戴上了眼鏡及毛線帽,假扮成名叫史考特的男孩去上學,他成為自己的小主人-李奧納德的四年級班上,最受老師竉愛的學生,在每一集影片中,他都嚐試不同新鮮事,斑斑/史考特對所有事充滿熱誠,各方面都努力讓自己成為最棒的。

*貝斯曼因《酷狗上學記》於2003年榮獲美國影視大奬-艾美獎「傑出動畫人士」,該動畫也獲得艾美獎「傑出特殊動畫節目」及英國影藝學院所頒發的「最佳國際兒童節目」等獎項。

 

 Teacher’s Pet

Teacher’s Pet is the Emmy award-winning animation series about a dog named Spot who wants to go to school so badly that he disguises himself as a boy (Scott) by donning on a pair of eyeglasses and a beanie cap. He becomes the best student and the teacher’s pet in his own master Leonard’s 4th grade class. In every episode, he experiences events for the first time. Spot/Scott has zealous enthusiasm, and the drive to be the smartest and best at everything.

*Gary Baseman won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual in Animation in 2003. Teacher’s Pet has won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program and the BAFTA for Best International Children's Programming.

客廳(歡迎的空間)

貝斯曼構築出的客廳,充滿慶祝及懷念的氛圍,是觀眾來賓可以坐下欣賞作品、與朋友家人談話的空間。

對貝期曼個人而言,客廳是充滿快樂回憶及各種靈感的生活空間。觀眾在此看到的咖啡桌,是藝術家童年時代,邊看卡通影片、邊畫圖的地方,他童年喜歡的各種角色,對他自己後來的創作都有著深遠的影響。

觀眾在探索客廳之時,可以遇見貝斯曼創造的許多角色,例如:同時身為秘密守護者及好朋友的「托比」,右腳是木頭義肢的「呆好運」,喜歡偷取天使光圈的「恰恰恰小惡魔」,以及能夠化解負面能量及仇恨的「咻咻」;在這客廳中展示的繪畫作品,也反映了貝斯曼長久以來跨足娛樂及音樂產業的歴程,包括獲得美國艾美獎肯定、由貝斯曼所創造並監製的《酷狗上學記》,以及為美國新銳搖滾樂團Nightmare and the Cat所做的視覺藝術設計等。

 

The Living Room (Welcome – Introduction)

The Living Room is the place where guests are welcomed to sit and enjoy conversation with family and friends, a place to celebrate and reminisce.

 

For Baseman, the Living Room is a place for fond memories and inspiration. Featured in this room is the original coffee table where Baseman would sit and draw as a child while watching cartoons, many of which have had a profound and lasting effect on him.

 

As you explore Baseman’s Living Room, you will be greeted by several of Baseman’s iconic characters, including Toby – the keeper of secrets and best friend; Dumb Luck – the peg-legged lucky rabbit; Hotchachacha – the little devil that steals haloes; and ChouChou – the creature that takes away negative energy and hate.

飯廳(歡慶的空間)

貝斯曼以童年老家的古董傢俱作為場景,刻劃家人分享食物、聯絡彼此情感的溫馨經驗。餐桌區展示了貝斯曼設計的桌巾及醒酒瓶等作品,牆上的畫作,卻暗喻了饗宴與飢荒、喜悅及犧牲的對比。此外,也有貝斯曼與《紐約時報》攝影師Holly Andres的共同創作,是在他老家飯廳拍攝,以「荒野女孩」為主題的攝影作品;而貝斯曼與西班牙名牌雅緻跨界合作的陶瓷雕塑〈貴賓〉,也呈現在此展間之中。

The Dining Room (Celebration)

The Dining Room, set with original furniture from the artist’s childhood home, evokes the experience of breaking bread and bonding over food. While celebratory with Baseman-designed table linens and decanters, the imagery and characters in the paintings are metaphors for feast and famine, joy and sacrifice. The room showcases a new collaboration between Baseman and New York Times photographer Holly Andres, portraying Wild Girls in the Baseman family dining room. Visitors will also be greeted by Baseman’s version of “The Guest,” a figurine produced by the Spanish luxury porcelain company Lladró.

The Hallway (Journey)

Baseman’s iconic character Toby is the artist’s seasoned travel companion, documented in dozens of photographs that capture his adventures. The humorous and perceptive Toby poses in front of major landmarks and has great cultural exchanges with men and women across four continents. Journeys to breathtaking landscapes, spiritual centers, and everyday experiences are seen through Toby’s open eyes and heart. The Hallway culminates in a new site-specific whimsical installation of Toby plushes.

臥房(人類處境的空間)

203展間以臥房的形式呈現,探討人類的愛及慾求、痛苦和犧牲等,強調了人文關懷的主題。對貝斯曼來說,慾望有無限多種的型態,例如:「阿嗚」以吸血的方式表達對愛及關懷的渴求;「無限女孩」一角則象徵在人們生命中,永遠無法獲得回應的另一種愛;名為「快樂儍瓜」的雪人因為愛上了美人魚,而甘願自我犧牲,讓愛人在融化的雪水中存活。貝斯曼透過這些不同的角色創造,傳遞了生命中悲喜參半的動人美感。

The Bedroom (The Human Condition)

The Bedroom references the human condition of love and longing, pain and sacrifice. Desire comes in many forms – through characters that express their need for love and affection by drawing blood, to Infinity Girls that represent unattainable beauty, to the character Happy Idiot, the snowman who “melts himself so that his beloved, the mermaid, can live within his body of water.” Through these works Baseman celebrates the beauty of the bittersweetness of life.

202展間以書房為主題,展出貝斯曼較近期的創作,其中不少是以自身家族故事為靈感發想。貝斯曼的父母親分別於2010及2012年過世後,他有意以藝術創作重啟家族歴史的探索之旅,深入挖掘並試圖詮釋貝斯曼家族的故事:身為東歐猶太大屠殺生還者的創痛,及他們逃難移民美國,白手起家打造一家六口快樂生活的奮鬥歴程。貝斯曼以自身獨特的觀點所拍製的紀錄片《神話生物》精華版,將會呈現貝斯曼獨特觀點下的家族歷史和場景。

The Study (Heritage)

The Study features recent work by Baseman that addresses his family heritage. With the passings of his father and mother in 2010 and 2012, respectively, he has taken the role of family historian – learning more about and interpreting through his work the story of the Basemans, Eastern European Jews who survived the Holocaust and immigrated to the United States to raise a happy family with four children. A short version of a documentary, “Mythical Creatures,” shows Baseman’s unique perspective on his family that addresses the complexity of history and place.

遊樂主題在小窩展間中處處可見,突顯貝斯曼與不同領域的創意合作,包含動畫作品及玩具/遊戲設計,如暢銷桌上遊戲Cranium。同時展出的是,貝斯曼設計的全系列玩具公仔,例如各色款式的呆好運及恰恰恰小惡魔,還有這些玩具的原始畫作及銷售包裝的設計等;小窩中也播放著貝斯曼原創,與美國ABC電視台及迪士尼電影合作拍攝的《酷狗上學記》,此動畫影集曾獲多次艾美獎及英國影藝學會肯定。

 

The Den (Play)

Entertainment is found in the Den that showcases Baseman’s collaborations in animation and toy design, including Cranium, an international best-selling and award-winning board game. On display are virtually all of Baseman’s designer toys, including all colorways of Dumb Luck and Hotchachacha, along with original paintings for toy and package designs. Also featured in the Den is “Teacher’s Pet,” Baseman’s animation series for ABC/Disney that won multiple Emmy awards and an award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

這個將辦公室及創作室合而為一的展間,揭示了插畫業對藝術家的高度要求,貝斯曼每個月在畫紙或畫布上,將自己的創意轉化為數十幅的插圖,這段時期的插畫作品,以完整壯觀的插畫牆方式呈現。同時,貝斯曼為許多知名企業及文化機構所繪製的廣告創作,搭配書籍插畫一同展出,勾勒出貝斯曼將思想訊息與藝術創意揉合一體的多元能力。1986至1996年期間,貝期曼居住於紐約,當時的數位通訊尚未普及,他常等在電話旁,等候工作回覆,或將構思的草圖,以傳真方式寄送,有時用快遞、甚至親送,將原創畫作遞送至《時代雜誌》及《紐約客》等出版社。在此展間中,同時也擺放著許多藝術家多年來的個人收藏,是他創作的重要靈感來源,其中包含二十世紀初的廣告物件及玩具,和許多指標性的流行文化角色,如豬小弟、米其林寶寶和米老鼠等。

 

The Studio (Work)

The Studio Office shows the demanding industry of illustration, for which Baseman churned out ideas on paper and canvas by the dozens each month, evidenced by the large wall featuring hundreds of works. Ad campaigns for major corporations and cultural organizations, plus book illustrations, show Baseman’s dynamic message-making capabilities. From 1986-1996, Baseman lived in New York City, a time before digital communication and a time when he would wait by the phone for assignments, fax over idea sketches, and deliver in person or via FedEx original artworks to the offices of the Time and The New Yorker. Also on display are the artist’s personal collection of inspiration objects, including early 20th century advertisement displays and toys, and iconic characters Porky the Pig, the Michelin Man, and Mickey Mouse.

後院(表演的空間)

來到後院,可以一窺貝斯曼在表演藝術方面的另一才華,見證他與眾多演員、模特兒、音樂家及舞者的共同創作成果。特別引人注目的是2009年的《融合之夜》,在此系列創作中,貝斯曼希望運用自創的神秘節日,破除人類社會中築起的規範高牆,讓觀眾及參與者可以發現並擁抱真實的自我。展間中特別搭建的〈頓悟的咻祭壇〉,是號召台灣藝術家、工藝師及民眾共同參與的合作計劃,希望以此來榮耀貝斯曼的奇幻世界中,這位致力消除世上所有仇恨與恐懼的神話角色。

 

The Backyard (Performance)

The Backyard features Baseman’s work in performance, collaborating with actors, models, musicians, and dancers. The 2009 series La Noche de la Fusión is highlighted through a number of objects, celebrating Baseman’s mythical holiday that calls for the restrictive walls of society to come down so everyone can discover and love their true selves. The Enlightened Chou Shrine, created in collaboration with dozens of Taiwanese artists and artisans, honors this deity that dispels our collective hate and fear.

公園(逃脫的空間)

貝斯曼2007年創作的《咻咻森林中的捉迷藏》繪畫系列,主要場景為「綿綿之愛的山丘」,本展以活潑、充滿生氣的方式將之完整重現。畫中主角荒野女孩和咻咻族們,因為打敗了企圖佔據森林的惡魔,而手舞足蹈,大地不再充斥恐懼害怕,取而代之的是自由與歡樂氣息,藉此提醒觀眾,應發揮生命最大的價值意義。展間中同時展示著貝斯曼與以色列時尚設計品牌「布勞女士」合作的服裝設計作品,以及貝斯曼的表演作品中,所使用的角色服裝。

 

The Park (Escape)

Baseman’s Hills of Creamy Goodness come alive with paintings from the 2007 series Hide and Seek in the Forest of ChouChou. Wild Girls and ChouChous cavort, having won the battle against the demons that tried to overtake the land. Instead of fear, there is freedom and joy, and the reminder to live life to its fullest. Fashion design collaborations with Tel Aviv fashion house Frau Blau and costumes from Baseman’s performances are set among this playful landscape.

小巷(夢境)

靠近201展間出口,觀眾可透過最新錄像創作-〈荒野女孩〉,進一步探索貝斯曼的異想世界。此影片描述居住在都市的一名青少女—維若尼卡,因擁有豐富的想像力,每到深夜仍胡思亂想,某日被媽媽趕上床睡覺後,她陷入自己素描本中的圖像所構成的奇異夢境中,貝斯曼獨創的各種角色,如死亡智者、真理智者、掩面自我、阿嗚、荒野女孩及咻咻們,都一一出現在她的夢境之中……。

 

The Alley (Dreams)

Upon exiting The Door is Always Open, visitors will continue their view into the world of Gary Baseman in a new video “Wild Girls,” about an urban teenage girl, Veronica, whose active imagination keeps her up late at night. When she falls asleep, images from her sketchbook seep into her dreams. The subsequent scenes feature iconic Baseman characters: Muerto Magi, Veritas, Hooded Self, Ahwroo, Wild Girls and ChouChous.
