Individualized Together, Polit-Sheer-Form in Taipei

Polit-Sheer-Form Office (PSFO) is an art group established in 2005 by contemporary Chinese artists Hong Hao, Xiao Yu, Song Dong, Liu Jianhua, and the critic/curator Leng Lin. Using the concept of a collective way of life as the backbone of their art, they hope to capture the accelerated social changes happening in China today. Each of the five members of PSFO are known in the international art scene for their unique artistic persona and sharp opinions on contemporary art.

Hong Hao (Beijing, 1965-) criticizes and questions survival and reality with humorous and sarcastic photography. Xiao Yu (Inner Mongolia, 1965-) explores the multivalence of human existence and social values through painting, installation, video and audio art. Song Dong (Beijing, 1966-) uses painting, installation, video, and performance art to represent the lives of the masses. Liu Jianhua (Jiangxi, 1962-) employs sculpture and installation to reveal different cultural phenomena coexisting under a historical framework. The necessity of the existence of culture by itself is at the core of Leng Lin’s (Beijing, 1965-) writings and curated exhibitions; not only is he active in all facets of the contemporary art field, the well-rounded critic/curator is also known for his pointed critiques based on a global perspective.

Although each of the five members has a successful solo career in the global art world, as a group they share a similar background growing up in Communist China and a common concern with how China’s rapid development is stamping out a shared human spirit. These shared life experiences and concerns gave birth to the PSFO art group and resulted in a number of collaborative works and travelling exhibitions.

Born in the 1960s,at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, all five members of PSFO experienced life in a commune as proletariats. After China entered the global economy in the 1980s, historic communist neighborhoods were gradually replaced by high-rises built under rapid urbanization and capitalism.

After twenty years under extreme communist rule, China is now developing rapidly according to trends in the contemporary world. In their work, PSFO members reflect upon the drastic impact brought forth by this societal transformation on human relationships. They capture how the intimacy between people in a communist society is gradually replaced by a sense of indifference propelled by capitalism, as communal goals are taken over by selfish consumerist desires.

As such, PSFO proposes to bridge the gap between the latent collective ideology with the individualistic social reality through art. Through the expansion of a collective identity, the group converses with the past and the future by replacing “I” with “we,” forming a collective art group by hiding the individual self. To foster a collective identity and sense of intimacy, the five artists brainstorm, read, and play together to communicate the idea that “form” is “content” and express psychological content through pure behavior.

“Mr. Zheng,” the emblem of PSFO, is a composite portrait of a fictional man whose face is a compilation of facial features of the five artists. “Polit-Sheer-Blue,” the signature color that permeates the works and gallery space of every PSFO art show, represents the conceptual basis for the group’s creations and also highlights the pervasiveness of collective projects by replacing ideology with artistic ideas.

PSFO uses a make-believe individualism to represent their observations of contemporary society through art and to express their yearnings for communism. They embrace the following principle in their art: “Polit-sheer-form is a form devoid of political content and core values; it is a kind of mobilization, a kind of mood, and an ideal form that does not harm the practice. At the same time, this practice is fictitious.”

About the Artworks

Porch/Plaza

Displayed on the porch above the entrance of MOCA, the bust portrait of Mr. Zheng is an anthropomorphic interpretation of the “When We Become I” principle upheld by the PSFO group. This portrait depicts a fictional character whose face is a blend of facial features of the group’s five members. Mr. Zheng is an emblem of the spirit of collectivism; he embodies the mechanism in which the individual puts himself behind in service of a larger entity. In the portrait, Mr. Zheng wears a white shirt with a PSFO badge (note*), lending the MOCA plaza a political air which is at once solemn and humorous. It evokes an era in which similar portraits of political leaders can be seen everywhere.

This installation transforms the museum into a government building by hanging a banner that reads “Built by the Polit-Sheer-Form Office” beneath the portrait of Mr. Zheng. The couplet that hangs on either side of the entrance serves the same purpose. At first glance, the couplet appears to be two stately lines of poetry; upon closer inspection, it reveals itself as a witty compilation of homophones of characters taken from the five artists’ names. Painted with the group’s signature “Polit-Sheer-Blue,” the 10 sets of sports equipment that occupy the plaza is part of a Fitness for All project designed especially for the residents of Taipei City. The equipment is available to local residents free of charge for the duration of the exhibition. Residents are encouraged to become collaborators of PSFO’s Do the Same Good Deed—Taipei by using the fitness equipment.

2F Hallway/Central Stairwell

Do the Same Good Deed – New York, a video installation located in the second floor hallway extending to the central stairwell, created for the PSFO exhibition at the Queens Museum in late 2014, records and shows hundreds of volunteers in Times Square with their tools of labor.

Large portraits of Mr. Zheng, PSFO slogans, and blue PSFO banners are displayed all around, creating a sharp contrast with the commercialism and consumerism embodied in the store signs, advertisements, and media images that surround Times Square. This performance raises awareness of the needs and interests of the collective, rather than those of the individual.

PSFO’s video installation, Do the Same Good Deed – Beijing, features fashionably-clad youth with bright blue buckets of water against the backdrop of a bus, a symbol of a collective society, on the streets of Beijing. The slow-motion, high-definition post-production video serves to accentuate the joyful play of people and the elegance of splashing water, accompanied by a rap rendition of the PSFO slogan. The piece at once draws attention to the vibrancy and social tension of our rapidly changing era while reflecting the transition of collectivism as a social order to its current form of expression.

Office transforms pure political concept into real form with five randomly placed chairs, and scattered drink bottles and plastic cups, as if left over from a recently concluded meeting. In addition, 95 black and white photographs of PSFO’s “milestones” are displayed on the walls, documenting the group’s collective activities and events since 1996, including their travels and recreational activities. The deconstructed Office initiates a reflection towards the definition of public space in the internet age, combining real form and virtual meaning, and signaling a continuous and infinite expansion and evolution of both the concept and form of the Office.

In Library PSFO displays shelves stacked with identical blue books devoid of content as one collective entity. Without any information, the books are but empty pages of blue. Libraries are generally considered to be a place of knowledge and enlightenment, but this blue Library does not provide diverse knowledge, only the same book. Blue is the color of the sky and ocean that connects the entire world. As PSFO puts it, “We use ‘blue’ as a global language to engage in a discourse on social issues, rather than explore ideologies from a ‘red’ perspective…because people’s thought and knowledge systems are increasingly fragmented.”

The bust portrait of Mr. Zheng, a large conference table, and 12 chairs in Meeting Room illustrate PSFO’s core principle: regardless of the content or objective, collective meetings and discussions are necessary formalities.

In 2005, PSFO was founded and held their first exhibition. A representative work from that show, Only One Wall conveys the guiding principle that the group is dedicated to artistic unity despite the five artists’ individualistic differences. The inspiration for this piece came from a photograph taken of a lake when PSFO first visited Shougang (one of China’s largest steel companies) and the village of Nanjie, a Maoist commune. Making use of verticality in limited space, Only One Wall presents the scenery of the lake surface extending horizontally into the infinite space, in a simple yet effective demonstration of the co-existence of the real and the virtual.

To alleviate the problem of air pollution, China’s State Council decided in 2005 that Shougang (one of China’s largest steel companies) would relocate from Beijing to Tangshan City, Hebei Province, in a move so massive in scale that it came to the forefront of public attention. To PSFO, Shougang and Nanjie Village are examples of the collective will and of industrialization under a socialist order. This photograph of Shougang, taken in 2008 before the Beijing Olympics, shows the blurry silhouette of the facilities through the smog, a sentimental symbol of the company’s historic rise and fall.

Note: Xuenong (Learn from the Farmers), Xuegong (Learn from the Workers), and Xuejun (Learn from the People’s Liberation Army) are educational campaigns organized by schools and other social groups during the Cultural Revolution in the PRC. Lasting between one week to a couple of months, these campaigns require students to step outside the classroom and work alongside farmers and workers in rural farming communities and factories.

When PSFO visited Nanjie, a village that deliberately mimicked the layout of Tiananmen in Beijing, the group was most impressed with the site of Happy Bridge and Garbage Hill. The village had retained vestiges of Maoist management, production, and way of life, and in their collective wisdom, collected and accumulated their garbage into a small green hill. Standing atop Garbage Hill, it’s not difficult to understand the villagers’ aspirations for the present and the future, and to imagine the potential for collective living.

PSFO’s artistic practice seeks to create a collective way of life. In the Wallpaper wall installation and PSFO Scrap Book display, PSFO presents all the receipts and tickets produced during their collective lives. The insertion of artistic principles into daily life sheds light on the values of collectivism, simultaneously creating a social commentary on artistic practice and aesthetic method to social existence.

An installation built out of frozen tofu, Pale Vessel will gradually defrost, decompose, and disintegrate during the exhibition period. In this exhibit, on-site installation and live video broadcast will be used to display the material’s decomposition and metamorphosis into art. By building an architectural structure out of frozen tofu, PSFO believes that the fragile medium serves as a dual symbol. On the one hand, it exposes contemporary China’s schizophrenic state and the resulting broken links in human connection; and on the other, it reflects common issues extending out of the cultural dialogue between global and local, honesty and hyperbole, and fiction and reality.

When Pale Vessel received a prize for innovation from the 2009 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, PSFO never opened the package containing the award. To this day, the package remains unopened and itself has become Prize, proof of the existence of Pale Vessel and recognition of PSFO’s attention to and interpretation of a systematic process of disintegration. The fact that PSFO has not opened or looked inside the package also reflects a conscious value-based choice on the part of the group. The concept of différance is embodied in the simultaneous display of Pale Vessel and Prize.

Five belts of varying lengths and styles, each worn by a different member of PSFO, stand in for the five artists and represent their individual differences. However, the variations and contrast among each of the five entities in this collective group can be unified and seen as one. As such, the ‘five belts’ become the s

The five banners in various colors, a large conference table, and 12 chairs in Meeting Room illustrate PSFO’s core principle: regardless of the content or objective, collective meetings and discussions are necessary formalities. Five exhibitions and manifestos arising from this Meeting Room are displayed on the five banners. However, there is no written manifesto for the latest exhibition. PSFO explains, “The relationship between the individual and collective, the collective and individual, can seemingly be described in a transparent yet wordless manner, just as ‘being’ and ‘nothingness’ constitutes an opposing yet unified concept in Chinese literature, philosophy, and religion.”

Tofu Wall is a collective impromptu performance by the five members of PSFO for each exhibition opening to commemorate the event. During the opening, the five artists use axes to cut their way through a plain wall, transforming the indecipherable blankness into an interface connecting the inside and outside. The axes imbedded in the wall act as signatures of the five artists for this collective performance. It signifies a new way to regard the environment around us, in which destruction is part of the process of creation.

Polit-Sheer-Form-Office, a series of 20 oil paintings of which three are exhibited here, imitates the form of early propaganda posters with images portrayed above political slogans. In this series, the images are enlarged recreations of PSFO’s collective events or related items, with ‘Polit-Sheer-Form’ written in clean, blue characters underneath. In one simple method, the 20 paintings effectively represent the group’s name, artistic slogan, aesthetic concept, and creative practice.

Tofu and kungfu are among the few words that are so easily recognizable and have such cultural significance that they have been phonetically translated from the original Chinese into the English lexicon. In PSFO’s 2009 project, the single channel video focuses on the theme of Tofu, Kungfu. The first part of the film utilizes text to describe ‘us’; the second part is filmed like a commercial advertisement, complete with orchestral accompaniment and dramatic lighting, showing masses of young people raising their arms and crying out the two words as if they were national slogans. The piece humorously uses the power of the collective and expands traditional rallying methods to inspire people to think about a new worldview and system of values.
