Candid Erotica:Amorous Paintings-York Hsiao Solo Exhibition

The exploration of life includes various aspects, such as discovery of one's self, spiritual identification, construction of values, pursuit of meanings…etc. Therefore, life's exploration should comprise of different experiences and experiments. Candid Erotica: Amorous Paintings displays the artworks by York Hsiao, who fully dedicates his life to artistic creation in recent years and possesses much knowledge about Taiwanese and foreign art. Hsiao adopts a unique perspective to observe and portray human erotica, delineating his theme from three aspects that are "abstract symbols," "earthly depiction," and "natural landscape," all together expressing his experimental spirit in multifaceted exploration and diverse expression.

Through his depiction of the three aspects, Hsiao presents an artistic trilogy that displays his interpretation of human desire in three series. The Truthfulness series that features abstract symbols incorporates an amalgamation of text and image as well as a sense of word play embodied by the homonymic sounds of idioms. Through a playful approach, the series candidly and truthfully releases the suppressed amorous thoughts, desires and human nature. The Sexuality series features the theme of "earthly depiction," treating and portraying sex in this world as part of nature's cycle. The sweet, gentle style of the series uses individual behaviors as a metaphor for social scenarios. The Feelings series comprises of Hsiao's landscapes depicted with concrete images in a realistic style. The artist intentionally incorporates and contextualizes images of male and female sexual organs in natural landscape, conveying his praise and reverence for nature's original vitality as well as how nature can tangibly stimulate and intangibly incite human desires and actions.

In this solo exhibition, the artist displays his three types of paintings at the same time. In terms of exhibition layout and traffic flow, he designs to let visitors pass through different entrances, guiding them into three spaces of respective ambience. Through reading paintings, penetrating spaces, prying into secrets, and playful interactiveness, audience can appreciate Hsiao's artistic creations of different media and forms. As reflected by the exhibition title:

The exhibition reveals the artistic journey of an amorist; because of his Truthfulness, he is not suppressing or camouflaging his desire.
The exhibition demonstrates an artist's amorous paintings; as propelling Sexuality permits, his works are candid and unpretentious.
The exhibition offers a chance to admire these candid paintings; for the resonance of human feelings, these paintings should be shared with all.

Candid Erotica: Amorous Paintings represents the artist's diachronic artistic achievements of self-assigned topics. It simultaneously demonstrates the various layers of Hsiao's art as well as the true color and nature of humanity. Viewing the exhibition is indeed a splendid journey of experimental spirit.

About the Artists

Artist Introduction

York HSIAO 1956-

The art development of York Hsiao is in-sync with the contemporary art, multi-facet and imaginative. One thing can be certain that the artist has spent a lot of time and efforts with local and international art business to maintain this close relationship to the contemporary art community. Art relates to life and comes from life. The image of words, Facebook, and sexual activities are essential elements in life. They are “popular, transient, expendable, low-cost, mass-produced, young, witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous, and Big business.” York Hsiao’s “Pop Style Abstract Expressionism” image trilogy is a product and symbol of current time. It reminds people to realize the essence of art in a different angle, and to reflect on one’s own life to sense the materialistic world and the activities in mind. Through the images of totemic forms, York Hsiao spells out his idea of human life, behind all the struggles, back and forth, to best demonstrate the Zen belief that the common life experience of human senses are all empty.

In York Hsiao’s own words, “Art is the work of Spirits.  It converts matters into images and thoughts into creation.  It is a career that is full of life.”

About the Artworks

Truthfulness

Featuring abstract symbols, this series aims to express and deal with the suppressed amorous feelings and desires of humanity. Hsiao presents them through a wayward or a riddle-like approach, prompting viewers' imagination and sense of humor for reading these works. For instance, Expectancy shows a house-bound couch potato figure, thinking about the subject of his desire and hoping to quench his desire while being enveloped in a soft couch. Climax compares oceanic waves to sexual pleasure when desires are met and fulfilled. Budding and Gorgeous reveal images that are more than flowers. The artist combines images of a bashful girl, a squid and flowers, creating playful images that carry sexual implications.

Blessing and Fortune depicts male and female figures with gourds whereas the background shows a sea of flowing sperms and a circular symbol that represents a woman. Duel and Target portray the union and opposition of male and female sexual organs, comparing romantic relationships to battles as both require precision in hitting the target. In the corridor of the gallery space, the artist specifically installed several interactive installations that allow audience to personally experience the feeling of "peeping."

「性」Sexuality

On view in Room 103 is the series of "earthly depiction," titled Sexuality. The artist attempts to employ a gentle, sweet style to delineate a wonderful world that combines urban culture and idyllic charm. In addition to expressing feelings and desires, the series is also a demonstration of society's vitality and energy.

This series was inspired by the architecture the artist saw in Prague. The houses are transformed and used as symbols of male and female bodies. Owls perching in the trees also convey a sense of warmth from nature. A Midsummer Night's Dream depicts a nocturnal scene with a vivid contrast between lit houses and stray animals on the streets. Open Branches and Scattered Leaves was inspired by the birth of the artist's granddaughter. The large leaves symbolize the protection of home whereas the spreading leafy branches hint at procreation and propagation. Rhapsody in Blue employs the clouds in the painting's background to symbolize sexual pleasure, conveying a sense of freedom, uninhibitedness, and the rhythm of life. In Ah, It's Spring, Feels So Good, and Hidden Spring, the artist portrays a lively spring with vibrant colors, conveying the idea that the world's flora and fauna are all in their own places. Human sexuality is subtly incorporated into these paintings in a natural and harmonious way.

「情」Feelings

For the tunnel that connects the gallery rooms, the artist specifically installs the lower bodies of a man and a woman, Life is Itself a Work of Art , hoping to guide the audience through the wonderful birth of life. The Feelings series on view in the next room mixes geological landscape, mountains and ocean as well as male and female sexual organs in the paintings. The Concealed Surprise depicts a monumental rock standing erect by a seaside; the delineation of the solid rock's erosion by the sea beckons at the power of nature that can conquer the most unyielding. Hole in One and Standing Erect embed longings and pursuits of sexual desire with depiction of male and female sexual organs in the lively natural landscape. Purple Secret and Fiery Passion employ contrasting colors to express impending a secret admiration and longings.

The largest painting on view in the exhibition is A Virgin Dawn. The artist delineates the natural landscape in a surrealistic manner and brings together Taiwan's scenic spots such as Jade Mountain, Yehliu and Ali Mountain in the painting. While delineating the magnificent view of a cloud sea, the artist also incorporates sexual symbols into the image, showing his worship of nature as well as the beauty and flourishing of romantic love.
