「時光之舟-陳哲偉個展」

The Vessel of Time – Che-Wei Chen

 

陳哲偉近年持續關注人的處境,試圖以不同角度切入探討精神病友的主體性。本展邀請位於花蓮的臺北榮民總醫院玉里分院的學員們一同參與創作,這裡收容其他醫療機構所放棄治療或不被家庭與社會接納者,於是數以千計的慢性精神病友寄身於花東縱谷之間,孤立於台灣地理與社會的邊緣。

In recent years, Che-Wei Chen has focused on the human condition, attempting to explore the subjectivity of those with mental disorders from varying aspects and interpret its state of being abandoned amid the management system of modern nations. This exhibition collaborates with Taipei Veterans General Hospital Yuli Branch in Hualien and invites participants accommodated by the hospital to participate in the creative process. The individuals accommodated by Yuli Branch are mostly either patients who have been given up by other medical institutions for treatment or those who are rejected by family and society. These individuals, up to one thousand people, are left to wander in the East Rift Valley, cast to the borders of the geography and society of Taiwan.

 

「時光之舟」以船為喻發展為四個篇章:《成舟》透過繪畫工作坊的形式讓學員們搭建屬於自己的方舟;《乘舟》探訪玉里鎮上居民與其共處的狀況,誰同在船舶上而我們又將航向何處;《沉舟》記錄學員個體過往載沉載浮之生命敘事,從中映現時代下潛藏的權力與政治;《船上的人》詮釋檔案中精神病友的肖像,重新顯現於現實缺席的面孔。展覽作品透過多重結構的影像與敘事,開啟精神疾病所對應的各層面感知與現實,反映壓抑下的集體潛意識,並對社會結構、歷史書寫與其中不公正的排拒提出詰問。

The Vessel of Time uses the raft as a metaphor for four different sections of the display: The Vessel Of Time (I) allows participants to build their own “vessel” through painting workshops, The Vessel Of Time (II) visits the residents of Yuli Township and their living condition: who is also on the boat and where are we all headed? The Vessel Of Time (III) documents the participants’ past encounters and the narrative of their lives, reflecting the hidden powers and political dynamics, while The Vessel Of Time (The Passengers) interprets the archival images of the psychiatric state of participants, reproducing the faces of those who are lost in reality. These works open different corresponding perceptions and realities of psychological illnesses through multi-structured images and narratives, reflecting the suppressed collective unconsciousness all the while questioning social structures, historical writings, and the unjust isolations within.

 

「時光之舟」延續《養神院》系列的創作脈絡,藝術家不拘於單一的方法論、以不同面向切入探討的創作手法,讓作品之間相互構成,試圖讓藝術成為一種對話的工具,探索關係實踐與重新架構的可能性。觀者得以在其中跨越幻想與現實、夢境與清醒,並重新認識與記憶這個世界。

The Vessel of Time is an extension of the creative context of Yang-Shen-Yuan series, a project about the psychiatric hospital built in the 1930s during the period of Japanese rule in Taiwan. The artist adopts methodology and creative tactics that probe into topics from different points of view, allowing complements and responses between works, transforming art into a chance for dialogue that investigates possibilities of relationship practice and reconstruction. Viewers are given a chance to cross the boundaries of imagination and reality, dream and clarity, acquainting and memorizing the world from a new viewpoint.

About the Artworks

時光之舟-成舟The Vessel of Time (I)

邀請學員們自主參與繪畫工作坊—繪製記憶中的船舶。失去主體性的靈魂擺盪於歲月大海之間,是如愚人船寓言般的驅逐漂流於此,抑或是為了度過浩劫所自行搭建的方舟?讓這些被社會歸類在正常之外的他者,藉由繪畫的形式,承載生命的實踐與想像,在現代性發展的劃分下提出自己所主觀經驗的世界。

Participants are encouraged to enter the painting workshop and create the ark of their memories. The individuals, souls with lost subjectivity, drift on the vast sea of time. Are they cast out like the Ship of Fools? Or are they fleeing catastrophe on a boat they have built themselves? Those who have been classified as abnormal by society embark on their practice and imagination of life through painting, proposing their own subjective view of the world among the categorization of the modern world.

時光之舟-乘舟The Vessel of Time (II)

拍攝、採訪玉里鎮上接納學員工作的店家,影像同時穿插職業復健的勞動過程,試圖拉出兩端的想像與現實境況。作品顯現繁複的社會結構裡附著的形象與價值,並隱喻近年拒絕雇用精障者、與其共處同住等污名排拒的現象。

Through photographing and interviewing shops that have accepted participants of the workshop to work in their businesses, the pictures reflect the process of career rehabilitation and attempt to show the attached images and values of a complicated social structure while hinting to the slander and isolation towards the mentally disabled both in the workplace and home environment.

時光之舟-沉舟The Vessel of Time (III) 

以生命經驗的旁白,重新尋回沉沒的個人記憶、敘事與影像,是為集體發聲的(個人)歷史,反映其中主動被動的抗衡關係、時代壓抑下的潛意識及隱匿的權力與政治。影像中的個人精神世界,是獨白或對話,也是連綿意識或如夢語言,更是他們以自身生命書寫的詩句。

Recounting life experiences and rediscovering lost memories, narratives, and images to give voice to (personal) history, the series reflects the counterbalance between the initiative and passive, the subconscious under the pressure of an era, and hidden power and politics. The private mental worlds of individuals are presented both as monologues and dialogues, a continuous consciousness or talks within dreams, even poetry composed with the lives of individuals.

時光之舟-船上的人The Vessel of Time (The Passengers)

以精神病學檔案的病友肖像作為實踐,提出對應於影像裡人物與自我的辯證關係。透過將檔案手工打磨、消去面孔,做出物質性破壞等工序,象徵性地詮釋生命的磨損。同時刻畫出在現實中無法現身之面孔,試圖從被壓抑的歷史陰影中重新顯現主體;無聲的形象也再次回應長期話語權的喪失及所處的啞默位置。

Using the archival portraits of psychiatric patients, this section draws attention to dialectical conditions of figures within the images. Through hand polishing and erasing the facial features within the archives, the artist adopts material damage as a metaphor for the wear and tear of life. The display also depicts the faces of those who are unable to present themselves in real life, endeavoring to free the subject from the oppressive shadow of history. Also, the silent image hints to the vulnerable position of individuals who have lost the right to speech.
