Joseph Kosuth Public Art Education and Promotion Program

About the Project│

‘One Field to the Next’, 2013 is a public artwork by internationally acclaimed conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth, commissioned for the new Taipei Main Station MRT Taoyuan International Airport Line. It is the first public work Kosuth has made in Taiwan. Inspiration came from a paragraph in the short story Running Mother written by famous Taiwanese author Guo Songfen. A poetic and allusive story dealing with memories of Taiwan’s past, Kosuth selected and represented one section of the text in its original Chinese, constituting the core of the artwork’s physical form and content. Translations were then made into ten global languages, including Japanese, English and French, and arranged around the Chinese to complete the installation. The design of the work actively resonates with the flow of movement and traffic at the station. Conceptually, it seeks to stress the connection between the work and its surrounding architectural and social environment.

Accompanying the installation, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei has organized the Joseph Kosuth Public Art Education and Promotion Program with the goal of helping the general public better understand the concept and motivation of ‘One Field to the Next’, 2013, as well as the process in which the imagery and flow of language in Running Mother was developed into a work of art. The Program is comprised of three parts:

Conceptual Art Workshop

Printmaker Lin Ren-Hsin was invited to serve as artist-in-residence at Taipei Rixin Elementary School to co-develop and teach a special art class with the school’s Art and Humanities teacher on the theme “language and life.” In the class, students learned about the basics of printmaking, and created vibrant multicolored prints of their own design inspired by the shape and meaning of their name. As part of the curriculum, students toured the Ri Xing Type Foundry in order to understand the development of a new creative business that grew out of the former typography industry. The program ran successfully through October 12, 2015. An exhibition of student works was subsequently held in June 2016 at the Zhongshan Metro Mall Exit R9 Corridor.

Public Art Seminars

Artist Joseph Kosuth is invited to Taiwan in the summer of 2016, where he will give a keynote lecture. Kosuth will also join Taiwanese arts and literature professionals and practitioners at a public art seminar accompanying the installation of his work.

Public Art Guided Tours

A total of twelve guided tours are expected to be given, one on each Saturday and Sunday following the inauguration of the Department of Rapid Transit System’s Taoyuan International Airport Line. All tours will be free of charge and open to the public via advance reservation. The tours will begin at Taipei Main Station’s A1 area on the International Airport Line where Kosuth’s work is located, serving as the anchor of the tour. They will then continue to visit other artworks displayed in the station and along the ‘Art Street’, a public art initiative realized by MOCA Taipei in the Taipei Metro Station’s underground shopping street. The tours will then conclude at the Guangneng Community where works created by artists-in-residence over the past few years are on show in-situ. Participants will be able to see and experience a wide range of traditional and non-traditional public art, and the different artistic approaches and aesthetics each work utilizes to communicate meaning.

Definition of Conceptual Art│

Conceptual art emerged in the late 1960s in Europe and America. The genre emphasizes the expression of ideas and concepts over finished art objects and traditional aesthetics. Generally, conceptual artists believe that the value of art lies not in its physicality, but in the meaning(s) that arise from the themes and connotations of the work. The artists channel their thinking into the making of art. Materiality is therefore employed with the sole purpose of allowing the viewer to perceive abstract concepts.

‘One Field to the Next’, 2013 Artist Statement, Joseph Kosuth

By use of the author Guo Songfen, I’ve chosen a text by a modernist who has expressed well the existential plight of being torn between the movement in one's life from the connection to a home and the identity of that and the guilt generated by such a departure, and his own fear of being abandoned by that same choice. I’ve chosen this text from ‘Running Mother’ which constitutes an apparently quiet passage, a reflective moment of contemplation provided by the simple experience of the view where one finds oneself. It is the traveler who stops and reflects, who experiences both where they have come from and where they are going combined in a moment of contemplation about where they are standing.

As is my practice, I have formed this work through its relationship to, first, its architectural site, and then to the social location as well, putting into play a text which reflects on the historical and cultural meaning of that same location which provides a context for its meaning.
