The volunteer team of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei is recruited and managed by the Specialist of Public Service of the Exhibition Department. In 2014, the team was comprised of 176 people, including 148 female and 28 male volunteers. The total service hours were 26,378, and the number of people that enjoyed the service was 236,812. The members of the volunteer team come from all kinds of background and include different age groups. As the museum has grown, since 2011, we began to have volunteers that have served ten years every year; and new generations of volunteers have continued to join the team, bringing in fresh energy and enabling the continuation of this legacy.

The volunteers follow a weekly schedule of fixed work hours. Each duty session lasts four hours and twenty minutes; and each day is divided into two sessions. The volunteers’ duties include artwork maintenance, guiding audience through exhibitions, and providing exhibition related information for visitors. For every exhibition, the museum organizes special education programs done by the curator and/or artist of the exhibition, who share their insights into the exhibition as well as their artistic journey. The education program is followed by an evaluation for conducting guide tours. Volunteers who pass the evaluation will be leading group guide tours and regular guide tours for visitors; this approach encourages the volunteers to challenge themselves and bring their potential into full play. Moreover, MOCA volunteers have repeatedly assisted exhibition artists in making their site-specific projects as well as the museum’s educational and promotional activities. In 2014, the number of reserved group guide tours reached 210 sessions, and 7,440 people enjoyed this service. The volunteers’ devotion in promoting contemporary art has also been realized and embodied in their active participation in the museum’s plaza events.

In 2014, the museum has been actively promoting and encouraging the application of the “Volunteer Service Book” and “Honorary Volunteer Card” approved by Taipei City Government’s Department of Social Welfare, hoping to motivate more people to join the group of volunteer services, which also offer various admission-exempt or discounting benefits. In addition to the annual exhibitions, we have also offered diverse exhibition education programs outside the museum, such as the exhibitions of “Art Street,” 2014 Street Fun, Fun Street, “Public Art Project,” and “Museum-School Collaboration Program,” enabling our volunteers to have a deeper understanding of the museum’s different exhibition forms and presentation as well as introducing fresh knowledge and re-shaping the meaning of art.

We hope that more art-loving volunteers would join this team to create a visionary future with our enthusiastic partners and infuse endless energy into the team. We also hope that this volunteer team could be a cradle that nurtures the seeds of contemporary art and guides them on their vast artistic journey.
