2009 Volunteer service and training

The volunteer team is part of the public service management by the museum’s Exhibition Department. Members of the team consist of volunteers and part-timers from all ages, walks of life, and educational backgrounds. This year, the number of active volunteers reached 180, working an average of 160 hours, and serving approximately 216,009 people. The proper functioning of MOCA Taipei’s exhibition spaces is largely due the volunteer team’s dedication to the museum and their passion for serving the community.

Responsibilities of volunteers include: being on duty during exhibition hours, assisting with exhibition installation and de-installation, and supporting the museum’s educational programs. Volunteers can become guides for the museum’s free tour services as they participate in the museum’s training courses and ultimately qualify in the guide examination. Some 204 group tours were arranged in this year, which served 8,178 people. Also, in order to provide touring service to non-group visitors, the museum began in this year to hold “scheduled tour services.” The scheduled tours start every day at 2pm, and the public can participate free of charge by just showing their exhibition tickets. Some 152 scheduled tours were arranged in 2009, which served nearly 2,093 people and received positive feedback from the public. These services demonstrate MOCA Taipei’s educational capabilities, while also displaying the museum’s growth in guided tour services.

Volunteers at MOCA Taipei not only fulfill regular exhibition duties, but also participated in several activities and events within and outside the museum. Indoor museum events include pre-exhibition training courses and inter-museum volunteer activities; outdoor events include community carnivals and fairs. MOCA Taipei also established a space for volunteers to express their creativity and display their creations. “Volunteer Space” is a room which allows volunteers to freely apply for themed solo or joint exhibitions. The participating “artists” can also complete their exhibition planning, installation, and promotion in this space, carrying out what they have learned so far in their experience with MOCA Taipei.
