The team of volunteers is managed by the public service sector under the department of exhibition planning.  At the end of 2011, the total volunteer count was 138 people, with the total service time at 30,498 hours and 202,834 people served.  This year, 81 % of the volunteers were women and 19% men.  The volunteer group consisted of people from age 18 to 65, including students and working people.

MOCA Taipei’s volunteer service includes working in shifts at the exhibitions to guide the audience in viewing the exhibitions in the designed flow and also to help with basic information inquires.  As for educational events and group-guided tours, these are assigned based on the volunteers’ interests.  To become an exhibition docent, the volunteers are required to go through training courses, and upon passing the inspection exam given by the museum, they would be qualified to provide guided tours or regular tours at set times.

For the training course, new comers must enroll in the full course arranged by the museum, and additionally, they are encouraged to take part in the museum’s training course designed for working people.  “Pre-Exhibition Training” is intended to educate the volunteers about the contents of the exhibitions; “Fire Emergency” course is to train the volunteers in how to deal with emergency situations; “National Arts and Cultural Group Visit” is a practical approach in guiding the volunteers to learn more about Taiwanese art and culture.

Moreover, we also continue to arrange training courses of various types; for example this year, we tried for the first time to arrange for volunteers to become lecturers and share their professional knowledge at art seminars.  The seminars included careers advices, and even magic, yoga, and other diverse group classes.  The objective is that in addition to skills in the areas of art and culture, they could also have the opportunities to interact with each other and also be inspired to use their creativities.

With the mission to cultivate contemporary art research and art administration human resources, since its opening, MOCA Taipei has always installed an internship policy open to college and graduate school students in Taiwan to come to the museum for internship and research opportunities.  The internship segments are divided into two parts annually, and recruitments are conducted for each segment, with the most internship turnouts focused during the summer season.  The actual number of interns recruited is depended on the needs and capacities available for each department.  The interns are then assigned to different tasks based on their interests stated in the applications.

In 2011, a total of 14 interns were recruited, and 3 were assigned to the exhibition department, 4 to the educational development department, and three to design, and one to public service.  Additionally, there were three international interns that rotated amongst different departments and interned for over six months.  MOCA Taipei interns are from diverse professional educational backgrounds, and for them to intern at the museum is a good way to get a basic understanding of what it’s like to work in the arts and cultural industry.  In addition to providing regular job learning and development, the experience is also beneficial for anyone with an interest to work in the field in the future.  Furthermore, in order to fortify the museum’s exchanges with educational institutions, in 2011, jobs were assigned to special projects with internship contracts signed with two universities in Taiwan (Department of Speech Communication at Shih Hsin University and Department of Communications Art at Wenzao Ursuline College), with each university appointing a student to intern at MOCA Taipei.

In accordance with the increasing attention put on internship in our society, MOCA Taipei continues to learn and gain feedbacks from our programs, and with each process, we always reevaluate and adjust the contents and regulations accordingly, in order to better fit the needs of both the museum and also the interns and to achieve the goal of internship education.

“Ten Years of Greatness, Bravo MOCA Volunteers!”  This is the self-expectation that the MOCA Taipei volunteer team has set for itself.  Upon the ten-year anniversary, we at MOCA Taipei are grateful to every volunteer that has dedicated his/her time and efforts here.  We also hope to inspire for more art lovers to join us and to continue to cultivate amazing seeds of contemporary art in the future.
