“Graffiti” used to be viewed as a controversial practice and was excluded from the mainstream art scene because the creation of graffiti often borders on criminality, which contrarily adds a sense of rebellion and mystery to the art form. In recent years, as society starts to pay more attention to “street graffiti” and the practice of art has become more diversified, many transdisciplinary events and exhibitions have begun inviting graffiti artists to create works in large exhibition sites and spaces. This new trend allows graffiti to surface from its previous underground existence in dark corners and gradually step into the contemporary art scene. It symbolizes a major step of graffiti art, which has now started “trespassing.”
This exhibition features the graffiti art group Escape PLAN ''X'' led by Hsieh Meng-Hsun, together with five other young graffiti artists, including Wong Bo-Xuan, He Sin-You, Yang Xi-Yao, Su Yu-Hung and Lien Yi-Ting. Using the outdoor plaza and container house of the MOCA Taipei as their creative platform, the artists will create street graffitis on walls of public space, iron-sheet structures and public transportation, shortening the distance between art and its audience by crossing over boundaries and meandering through the streets to create graffiti art.
