This panel is correlated to Musquiqui Chihying’s exhibition, There Are Lights that Never Go Out, as a parallel event to open up more discussion on blackness, discrimination, algorithm and Africa-Asia relationship in the realm of visual culture. In the exhibition, he examines the history of photography, the material of the film, and series of movie-making infrastructure that was systematically developed in a way that is difficult to see Black actors’ skin. As the technology of photography enters the digital age, this phenomenon not only failed to resolve such problem but further accelerate and scald to have an immense impact when algorithms and facial recognition systems are deployed globally.
Now the biggest cellphone company in many African countries are owned by Chinese companies, the algorithm system was developed by the Taiwanese tech company. We think it is time to bring more awareness and discussion on technology and bias.
