Exhibition ticket is a type of voucher created for museum admission. It gives the audience the right to enter the designated site to view an exhibition and appreciate showcased works. Meanwhile, as a form of symbolic mediation for works in and events of an exhibition, before the audience see the exhibition in person, a ticket design can convey curatorial ideas, artists’ concepts, featured artworks and relevant experiences of an exhibition in advance through diverse arrangements of graphic design, incorporating these elements in an equally valuable manner into the priced ticket. For the art institution, tickets are not only mere documents based on which the income of an exhibition is calculated; and for the audience, a ticket denotes the visual expectation and sensory deployment of an upcoming exhibition. Moreover, behind the production of symbolic meaning, how is the multiple printed matter conceived and further extended for the purpose of developing exhibition souvenirs within the art institution? These are the topics that this exhibition aims to explore.
Entrance by Evidence is a special exhibition featuring ticket designs of MoCA Taipei’s exhibitions over the past two decades. Examining the abovesaid topics, the exhibition is divided into two sections, respectively defined as “Symbolic Mediation” and “Mechanism Production.” According to the various types of symbolic mediation, the former categorizes the tickets from the past twenty years based on four visual communication techniques – “Interactive Participation,” “Art Objects,” “Multiple Senses” and “Visual Graphic.” The latter, on the other hand, reveals the operation and production mechanism within MoCA Taipei and demonstrates how tickets are linked with and guide the audience’s imagination of exhibitions. With the spatial deployment/transition of two adjacent gallery rooms, the exhibition revisits the value system founded on the combination of “audience—ticket—exhibition—work—document,” and reviews MoCA Taipei’s pioneering work in the ticket design.
