Since 2009, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), Taipei has organized a series of exhibitions that brought art into the neighboring communities, hoping to step out of the museum walls and let the general public encounter and experience art in their living environment. From a series of exhibitions, titled Vision of Tatong, to Street Fun, Fun Street Community Art Festival held annually around the time of the Moon Festival, MoCA, Taipei has been closely interacting and collaborating with the community residents, turning Chifeng Street into an innovative site of creativity and culture in Taipei.
This year’s Street Fun, Fun Street – MoCA X Community Art Festival is comprised of three community-based subprojects respectively called “Art Buds,” “Street Walks,” and “Artopia Invasion,” interweaving a delightful, aesthetic landscape of the lanes and alleyways in the cool, crisp Fall season. “Art Buds” aims to enhance the ability of artistic creation and the interaction with the participating community residents. Three groups of artists are invited this year to individually guide the community residents to learn and experience the contemporary metalwork art, the innovative application of traditional materials, and the creative use of popular masking tapes. After the classes, the works created collectively by the residents will be displayed in the community space.
“Street Walks” invites eleven young Taiwanese artists to transform their subtle observations of and feelings toward the street space around the museum into colorful wall-paintings, spatial installations, video and animation works, graphic works, public art, and community-oriented publication. Through diverse perspectives and dynamic interactions, their works guide the audience to learn about and experience the characteristics of a community-based lifestyle and the newly created cultural spaces. Taking a walk in the community, art will be just around the corner.
“Artopia Invasion” embodies MoCA, Taipei’s attempt to explore the integration of the new and the old, the appearance and disappearance of cultures and spaces in old communities through incorporating contemporary video art and living space. As video works are projected in old communities and embedded in the urban space, they become separated from the daily life and begin to contrast and collide with the heterogeneous space and time. The virtual images of the videos create a dialogue with the real space, producing a heterotopia that is virtual and existing outside of the reality. In between the reality and fictionality of the videos, we launch our imagination, representation and dialectics of the living space, and through which, re-examine the collective subject of the local residents while contemplating on the community’s existing reality and the possibilities of imagination.
