【Artist Workshop】Umi-hands Haenyeo in Magang

    1.Conducted in Mandarin and Taiwanese, with English-to-Mandarin consecutive interpretation provided.
    2.Please arrive at the meeting point during the check-in period. The bus will depart promptly at 08:30; latecomers will not be accommodated.

Workshop Introduction

Guided by artist Hyemin SON, participants will visit Magang to explore local maritime culture and coastal livelihoods through the history of the agar-agar industry and seaweed harvesting. Through interviews and a shared meal with local residents, participants will listen to their stories of living alongside the sea. They will also take part in hands-on activities, including agar-agar jelly making, a paper-folding workshop, and a female diver experience, gaining a deeper understanding of Magang's bond with the sea through local shellfish harvesting practices, traditional foodways, and the coastal environment.

※This project is a collaboration with Lin Kuei-Miao (cultural worker), Wu Han-En (Dawn Culture Studio), and Magang sea women divers. Paper folding workshop created by Gyunghye Yoo, Busan based curator. ●How to Register
1.Please complete the "Online Registration Form" on the MoCA official website.
2.Upon receiving your registration details, we will send a "Registration Confirmation & Payment Notice" via email.
3.Please complete the payment within 24 hours of receiving the notice. If payment is not completed within this timeframe, your registration will be canceled without further notice.

●About the Artist
Hyemin Son
Hyemin Son is a visual artist based in Busan, Korea and a member of Rice Brewing Sisters Club, which she co-founded in 2018. Her practice focuses on the collectivity inherent in the process of fermentation, approaching it as a practical engagement with organic materials and drawing inspiration from the ecological economic community formed by such as Haenyeo.

●About the Local Presenter & Interactor
Lin Kuei-Miao
Cultural Worker. Through her involvement in assisting Magang’s petition to preserve its traditional stone house settlement, Lin realized that stones serve both as habitats for marine life and as the building blocks of human homes. Captivated by Magang’s distinct natural and cultural character, she continues to foster a sense of "island identity" through field research, writing, and curatorial projects.

Wu Han-En
Deeply passionate about the mountains and sea of Gongliao, Wu actively engages with local culture and marine environmental issues. Through guided tours, experience design, and community connections, she introduces audiences to the stories of this land while inviting collective reflection on our relationship with place.

Chen Wang-Sei
Affectionately known as " Wang-Sei A-Ma," Chen is currently the most senior coastal gather in Magang. She began learning coastal gathering from her mother as a child, accumulating over sixty years of experience. Though no longer diving as she ages, she still diligently forages sea snails and scrapes wild nori along the shore. She also warmly shares her vintage foraging tools and leads visitors to the coast to demonstrate traditional oyster shucking.

Notes
1.Capacity for this workshop is limited, and advance online registration is required. A "Check-in Notice" email with event details will be sent 2 days prior to the workshop. Please check your inbox accordingly.
2.This event includes outdoor itineraries. Please wear casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes, and bring your own rain gear, drinking water, and reusable utensils. Water refills are available at the Magang Community Activity Center; raincoats are preferred over umbrellas for ease of movement.
3.Please take precautions against sun exposure and stay hydrated. Sun-protective clothing and hats are recommended over sunscreen to minimize impact on marine life.
4.Straw Sandals Experience: For hygiene reasons, please bring an extra pair of socks to wear with the straw sandals, as well as a small towel to wipe off after coming ashore. The straw sandals fit sizes 22–28 cm; participants whose foot sizes do not fit this range should bring their own anti-slip shoes.
5.During guided tours and outdoor activities, please follow the tour guide's instructions at all times and stay with the group.
6.The workshop will be canceled if work and school suspensions are announced in either Taipei City or New Taipei City, or if the Central Weather Administration issues a Heavy Rain Special Advisory (or higher) for Gongliao District, making it unsafe to proceed. Under other weather conditions, the event will proceed as scheduled; however, if the Haenyeo (female divers) determine the sea condition is unsuitable, that specific segment will be converted into an indoor talk.
7.MoCA Taipei reserves the right to modify all event details. Should the event be postponed, canceled, or changed to an alternative format due to unforeseen circumstances, announcements will be posted on our official website and Facebook page.

    If any of the content on MOCA Taipei’s website or anyone using MOCA Taipei’s service has infringed on your copyright, please fill out the “Copyright Infringement Notice,” provide the information and statements listed on the notice, and send them to MOCA Taipei via fax.

    1. Signature of the copyright owner or the signature of the proxy of the copyright owner; document proving the ownership of the copyright and the copyrighted contents, i.e. the cover and related pages of a publication, print-outs of webpage contents and the URL.

  • MOCA Taipei’s principle of handling the report on copyright infringement:

    1. MOCA Taipei will remove the webpage content claimed to cause the copyright infringement as soon as possible after receiving your notice, and will inform the user about the infringement via email. If the said user objects to said infringement, MOCA Taipei can provide your name, email or phone number to said user so that direct communication can be achieved to resolve the dispute.

    2. According to MOCA Taipei’s privacy policy and related regulations, MOCA Taipei is only allowed to provide a user’s personally identifiable information to a third party by the request of the law or a governmental agency unless said user agrees or for the purpose of providing a service. Therefore, when you file a report, MOCA Taipei will only remove the contents causing the copyright infringement, and will not provide you any personally identifiable information of said user. If you wish to obtain the user’s information, a legal proceeding must be filed at the District Prosecutor’s Office or the Criminal Investigation Bureau, who will issue an official letter to MOCA Taipei requesting the user’s information. In the case, MOCA Taipei will comply accordingly.

MOCA Taipei values user’s privacy very much and has implemented the following privacy and data protection policy, which is listed below for your reference.

The privacy and data protection policy includes MOCA Taipei’s management of personal identifiable information collected when providing users the website service as well as MOCA Taipei’s management of any personal identifiable information shared between the museum and our business partners.

The privacy and data protection policy is not applicable to any enterprise other than MOCA Taipei, nor does it apply to those that are not staff or managements employed by MOCA Taipei.

When you register a MOCA Taipei account, use MOCA Taipei’s products or services, browse MOCA Taipei’s website, take part in related promotional activities or gifting programs, MOCA Taipei will collect your personal identifiable information. MOCA Taipei is also allowed to obtain said information from our business partners.

When you register a MOCA Taipei account, you will be asked to provide your name, email, date of birth, sex, work title, field of profession and personal interests. Once your registration is successful and the account is successfully logged into for the use of our service, we will be able to recognize you.
